Susan Elizabeth McRae of Fayetteville, Arkansas, passed away peacefully in Oklahoma City on September 22, 2025, at the age of 97.
She was born February 26, 1928, to Thayer Ewing Shelton and Alice Kinney Shelton. She was an active member of the Rural Builders Club at Son's Chapel and First Presbyterian Church. She worshiped at St. Mark's Methodist after moving to Oklahoma City in 2023. At various stages of her life, Susan was a full-time volunteer in the Girl Scouts, American Red Cross and Daughters of the American Revolution. She had deep family roots in Northwest Arkansas as the great, great granddaughter of Peter & Tempie VanWinkle through the Walker family.
Susan was married to Edward Walton McRae June 11, 1948. She was preceded in death by her beloved husband and her parents. She is survived by her three daughters: Elizabeth Walton Lewis and husband Robert Lewis of Greenbelt, Maryland; Susan Lynnette Kanary and husband Robert Kanary of Oklahoma City, Oklahoma, and Alice Anne Perry and husband Steve Perry of Grand Prarie, Texas. She was a cherished grandmother to four grandchildren: Jonathan Michael Kanary and wife Hannah, Sara Elizabeth Kanary, Gregory Harrison Collier and wife Maddie, and Robin Miles Walton Lewis. She has one great granddaughter, Miriam Elizabeth Hope Kanary.
The funeral will be held at 10:00 a.m. on Saturday, October 11, 2025, at Son's Chapel in Fayetteville, Arkansas. The service and graveside will be followed by a time for sharing memories in the basement of Son's Chapel. Friends and family are invited to gather in remembrance and celebration of Susan's remarkable life.
