Susan T. Shimkowitz, 75, of Crystal Falls, passed away Tuesday, July 8, 2025, at her home.
Susan was born November 9, 1949, in Crystal Falls, MI, daughter of the late Samuel and Marjorie (Holkup) Eckola. A 1968 graduate of Forest Park High School, she attended Bryant and Stratton Business School in Milwaukee, WI, where she earned an Executive Secretary degree in 1969. Susan was a paralegal for the state of Connecticut for many years, retiring in 2003. On November 10, 1990, she married Elliot Shimkowitz in Newington, CT, where they resided before returning to Crystal Falls after her retirement.
An avid reader, Susan enjoyed doing all kinds of puzzles, watching Nascar racing, spending time on her computer, and traveling. She was also a member of the North Country Cruisers Car Club in Crystal Falls.
Susan is survived by her husband, Elliot; her son, Derik Read of Crystal Falls; 2 step-sons, Louis (Lisa) Shimkowitz of Berlin, CT, and Aaron Shimkowitz of Newington CT; a nephew, Christopher Eckola; 2 grandchildren; 8 step-grandchildren, a great-grandson and numerous cousins.
Along with her parents, she was preceded in death by a brother, David (Linda) Eckola; her uncles, Francis "Bud" Holkup and George Holkup; her aunt, Marion Holkup; and her grandson, Devon Read.
Private family services will be held.
