Susan H. Werner, 77 died peacefully Monday, November 4th at the Alice Center in Malone, NY after a long battle with Alzheimer's disease. She was predeceased by her parents, Albert and Lucille Hoen of Chadwicks, NY. She is survived by her husband, David, and her children, Michael Werner and his wife, Ruth, of Sackets Harbor, and Laura Holmes and her husband Eric of Saranac Lake. She is also survived by six grandchildren, Owen, Blake and Lyla Werner, and Kaylee, Karissa, and Lena Holmes.
Sue was born on April 2, 1947, in Utica, NY. She graduated from Chadwick's High School in 1965. She continued her education at Mohawk Valley Community College for two years and obtained her nursing degree from Utica College of Syracuse University in 1969. After graduation, she was a pediatric nurse at the Slocum-Dickson Clinic in Utica, and after moving to Malone in 1975, worked as a school nurse for the Franklin-Essex-Hamilton BOCES.
Susan was active in the Malone Garden Club and the Malone YMCA, serving on the Y's Board for several years. She and Pam Spaulding also taught low-impact aerobics at the "Y" for many years. She loved skiing, hiking, canoeing, kayaking, and going to hockey games in Montreal, where she and her husband Dave enjoyed season tickets for over 48 years. They were honored by the Montreal Canadiens Hockey Organization on November 11, 2011.
She was a member of the Centenary United Methodist Church, serving many years in the church choir and in the ecumenical Christmas choir. She was a member of the United Methodist Women, helping in the various activities such as dinners, rummage sales, adopt-a-highway, and anything that needed a volunteer. She was very supportive of her two children, going to their sports games, their school functions, hosting their friends for sleepovers and activities, and pretty much anything that involved her kids.
Susie also loved being a grandmother and doing things with and for her grandkids. They meant the world to her. She was always there for anyone that needed her help in any way, until her last few years as she battled the dreaded Alzheimer's disease. When she could no longer help others, others came to help her, as the community offered support in numerous ways. As the disease progressed and more care was needed, she spent her last year in the Alice Center nursing home in Malone under the care of the excellent staff in that facility.
She will always be remembered as being so much fun by all those that knew her, and she will never be forgotten by anyone that did.
Visitation will be held on Wednesday, November 13, 2024 from 10:00 AM to 12:00PM at Frary Funeral Home, Malone with burial to follow in Morningside Cemetery.
