Dr. Sylvia Lucille Barnes, 75, peacefully passed on February 13, 2024, at Trident Medical Center, North Charleston. Born in Dayton, Ohio on December 6, 1948, she had been a resident in the Goose Creek and Summerville areas for more than 30 years. She was preceded in death by her parents, Arthur and Lucille Barnes, and her brother Tom. She is survived by her loving husband, Ted Caudill; children Paul (Michelle) Signorelli, Lynette (Darryl) Shisler, and Katie Signorelli; grandchildren Alec Kovacevich, Brady Kovacevich, Tony Kovacevich, Andrew Wells, and Ashleigh (Cody) Keeton; and sister Patricia Hadler.
She grew up on a farm in Pataskala, Ohio, and later moved to the Strongsville and Akron, Ohio areas, where she married and raised her children. Sylvia was a 1967 graduate of Watkins Memorial High School, and a 1983 graduate of Baldwin Wallace University where she received a BS in Biology. She attended medical school at Northeast Ohio Medical University, graduating in 1990. After a three-year residency in family and emergency medicine, she moved to Summerville to start her medical practice.
Over the years Sylvia received many awards and acknowledgements but she was most proud of being named to the Who's Who in Medicine and Healthcare in 1999-2000 and recognized by the Berkeley County United Way for providing care to low-income families. Additionally, she went on several mission trips to Belize, Costa Rica, and the Amazon where she helped set up clinics and provide general medical care to indigent villagers, most of whom couldn't speak English.
The family will receive friends beginning at 12:00 noon at the James Dyal Funeral Home, 303 S. Main St., Summerville, with a memorial service at 2:00 p.m. Burial will follow at Carolina Memorial Gardens, 7113 Rivers Ave., North Charleston.
Memorial contributions can made to Lowcountry Community Hospice House – Agape Care, 374 Myers Road, Summerville, 29486, or to the American Lung Association, P.O. Box 80338,
Charleston, 29416. The family would like to thank the dedicated healthcare professionals who provided loving care to Sylvia during her long illness and particularly at the end of her life.

Aunt Sylvia, you are one of the family members in my young life to encourage me to set and achieve a career goal in healthcare. I remember going to the laboratory with you when I was about 14 or 15 years old. Rest in peace, love Tina
