Sylvia Yvonne Cain, Sr was born on February 4, 1941 to the late William N. Henry and Irene Shumake Henry. On March 3, 2024, an angel arrived to take Sylvia into the new land not made by hand.
Sylvia was educated in the Wilmington Public School System and was immensely proud to be a 1959 graduate of Old Howard High School. She also attended Delaware State College and took many classes in Early Childhood Education.
On November 5, 1960, she was united in holy matrimony to John Richard Cain. This marriage lasted for 30 years. From this union, two beautiful daughters were born. Sylvia Yvonne Cain, Jr., and Sheila Yvette Cain. Sylvia always gave God the glory for allowing her to see her daughters grown, educated, and self-sustaining. One of her greatest achievements was being a Girl Scout Leader of Troop 821 for sixteen years. She always said working with children kept her young.
Sylvia was a dedicated employee and retired from the Christina School District after 30 years of service. She served as the Senior Secretary at Lore Elementary and Drew/Pyle Elementary Schools. After retirement, her love for children led her to return to work as a grandparent in several Day Care Centers until the age of 73.
She was a woman of faith. Her favorite songs were "To God Be the Glory," "Tis So Sweet to Trust in Jesus," and "Great is Thy Faithfulness." Her favorite quote was "I can do all things through Christ who strengthens me." She enjoyed collecting dolls and musical boxes.
At the age of twelve, Sylvia accepted the Lord as her personal savior at Ebenezer Baptist Church. In July of 1979, she joined the Simpson United Methodist Church under the leadership of Rev. Dr. William E. Russell. There she became highly active in many organizations. She sang with the Covington Ensemble which she absolutely loved as they traveled up and down the highways giving God the praise. She was a dedicated Communion Stewardess, member of the Evangelism Committee, Prayer Warrior, United Methodist Women's Choir, Mass Choir, and a Bible Study Class member.
Sylvia was a loving, devoted big sister and aunt to her family. Her love of people led her to reach out to her community, church family, and friends. Singing and praising the Lord brought her boundless joy. In 1991, she started her card and religion book distribution ministry.
She leaves to cherished her memory two daughters Sylvia Y. Cain, Jr (Nafise), Sheila Y. Cain, her former husband John R. Cain, her siblings one sister Lillian H. Royster, three brothers William C. Shumake (Marion), Spencer N. Henry (Joanne), and John Colbert Henry(Iva), many nieces and nephews, special cousin Sydella Edwards, special friend Rev. Dr. Corteze B. Rawley, her godson Tobias Evans, her loving dogs Simba and Sheba, Simpson Church Family, and a host of dear friends, and relatives.
All services for Mrs. Sylvia Y. Cain, Sr. will be private by the request of the family.

Mrs. Sylvia was such a beautiful and kind lady. Epitome of grace. She was the only one of my Ford Avenue neighbors to congratulate and gift me when I graduated from high school. Meaningful memories stay with you. Heaven indeed gain another angel. From the John and Thelma Kenney family heartfelt condolences wished to Sylvia, Sheila and Mr. Cain.

Mrs. Cain was not only a neighbor, but a part of my elementary school experience. She was our Girl Scout leader and a role model for me and many more. She always greeted us with a smile and showed so much love toward us. Her presence will continue in all who were influenced by her. My prayers go out to Sylvia and Sheila for comfort at this time.
