Sylvia Horowitz Obituary
Obituary published on Legacy.com by Robert E. Shure & Son Funeral Home, Inc. on Nov. 8, 2024.
Sylvia Mendelson Horowitz, was born in Brooklyn, New York, on June 10th 1929 to the late Louis and Sarah Mendelson. She passed away on Wednesday, November 6th, 2024 quietly in her sleep. She was 95 years old. Sylvia was a devoted mother, grandmother, great grandmother and friend. Sylvia met her husband Bernie after he returned from the war, were married in 1948 and had many adventures for 71 years, until he passed away at age 95 in 2019. We credit his long life to her good cooking and only allowing him to eat healthy foods. (Unless she wasn't watching!) As a young mother, Sylvia raised her children to be contributing members of a family and also to give back to the community. Sylvia worked as a bookkeeper, able to balance a checkbook to the penny and passed on her budgeting skills if not accounting skills to her children. She and Bernie took their children on vacations around the United States and once they were empty nesters traveled to many European countries, Israel, and many national parks in a rented motorhome with their friends, the Slusky's. Volunteering was a big part of her life, whether donating blood, working at the tennis championships in New Haven, Special Olympics and once she retired, at the Ansonia Nature Center. She was a great cook and her brisket ensured that the family would be there at every holiday with hopes of leftovers after a great meal. Her Ansonia gardens were the envy of the neighborhood with many of her plants now growing in family gardens in Hebron and Rhode Island. We thought of her as the energizer bunny, always off hiking, biking, with her book club, at card games, museums and lunches with friends. Mom's legacy is the family she left behind, children Marsha (Dan) Lodge, Hebron, CT, Diane (Thom) Degnan, Walnut Creek, CA and Michael Horowitz of Cambridge, UK. Her grandchildren, Jennifer, David, Benjamin, Todd, Jamie, Aaron and Asher will fondly remember their Bubbie. Also missing their great grandmother are Isaac, Simon, Jonah, Ronan, Fiona, River, Emma and Charlie. Although they are scattered around many countries, continents and time zones they either visited with her in person or on zoom as she was computer savvy. Funeral Services will be held at Robert E. Shure & Son Funeral Home 543 George Street in New Haven on Tuesday, November 12th at 11:00 am, In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to Hadassah
