Sylvia Najjar was welcomed into Jesus' arms on May 28, 2025. Born in DeRuyter, New York, on June 14, 1942, Sylvia was the only child of Charles and Ila Muir. She graduated from Clyde High School in 1960 and attended Genesee Hospital School of Nursing, where she became a Licensed Practical Nurse in 1962. Holding the titles of Staff Nurse, Charge Nurse, and Clinical Nurse, she worked at Newark State School, Newark Mann Nursing Home, and Newark Wayne Community Hospital. She concluded her nursing career at Strong Memorial Hospital, in the Medicine and Neurology Department.
Sylvia was also a gifted writer, never far from a pen and notepad, writing thoughts, poems, and reflections wherever inspiration struck. She enrolled in writing courses at RIT to further her skills and love of writing. Her love for words extended into an appreciation for music and books. A frequent visitor to The Grand Library, Sylvia cherished the quiet company of books and the joy of learning. She often hummed softly to the radio, her tunes a gentle soundtrack to her world.
She had a bright sense of humor and a deep appreciation for life's simple pleasures, especially car rides with her daughters in Rome, NY where she spent the final chapter of her life at The Grand Rehabilitation and Nursing Center.
Sylvia is lovingly remembered by her three daughters Kathy Catanzarite (Fran), Laurie Rivers (Kevin), and Suanne Starkey, and her beautiful grandchildren, Gracie, Alexandra, Michael, Audrey, and Ian. Her memory lives on in each of them, in their stories, their laughter, and the love they shared.
Her family would like to extend heartfelt gratitude to the staff at The Grand Rehabilitation and Nursing Center in Rome, NY, for the compassionate care and kindness they showed Sylvia. Their support and dedication brought comfort and dignity to her final chapter.
A private burial will be held with immediate family on Sunday, June 1, 2025, at Fayetteville Cemetery in Fayetteville, NY.
In lieu of flowers, the family kindly requests that donations be made to Kathy Catanzarite, who will use the funds to purchase bird feeders and books for the residents at The Grand, in loving memory of Sylvia.
