Sylvia Ellis Simmons, age 74, entered into eternal rest at West Jefferson Medical Center on Monday, January 19, 2026. She was a native and resident of Marrero, LA. Sylvia was a 1969 graduate of Lincoln High School, and she attended Southern University at New Orleans for 2 years. She was a retired employee of the State of Louisiana. Sylvia was an honorary member of First New Testament Baptist Church of Marrero, LA, pastored by Rev. Sterling Jones. Devoted mother of Anissa M. Simmons, and Millicent A. Simmons. Loving grandmother of Tracy L. Green, Jr., Claudell R. Anderson, IV. And Kaylon M. Anderson. Great grandmother of Tracy L. Green, III. Beloved daughter of the late Edward Ellis, Jr. and Flora Starks Ellis. Granddaughter of the late Martha Simms. Sister of Tamie E. Lee and the late Edward Ellis, III, Martha Ann Barnes, Ava E. Dorsey, Kathy E. Diggs, and James E. Ellis. Great aunt of the late Akeem J. Dorsey. Sylvia is also survived by a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, other relatives, and friends. Relatives and friends of the family, also pastors, officers, and members of First New Testament Missionary Baptist Church and all neighboring churches; members of Lincoln High School Class of 1969; employees of Inspire NOLA Charter Schools, UNO Upward Bound, and Southwest Airlines are invited to attend the Homegoing Celebration at St. Stephen Missionary Baptist Church, 1738 L. B. Landry Avenue, New Orleans, LA on Saturday, January 31, 2026, at 10:00a.m. Pastor Norman Francis, host pastor; Rev. Damien J. Brown, pastor of Little Zion and Second St. John Baptist Churches of Avondale, LA, officiating. Visitation will begin at 8:30a.m. until service time at the church.
