Sylvia Ferguson Summers

Born on April 2, 1967, Sylvia brought joy and light into the world from the very beginning. Raised in a close-knit family by her mother, Jackie Ferguson, and the late Roosevelt Ferguson, she shared a lifelong bond with her brothers, Donald Ferguson and Rodney Ferguson both of Greensboro, NC. She went on to marry Dennis Summers of Charlotte, NC, and later became a proud and devoted mother to her son, Devin Summers, who was the greatest blessing of her life. She was a graduate of James B. Dudley Sr. High School, class of '85. Sylvia was also an active member of the East White Oak Church Family.

Sylvia was a woman of strength, grace, and unwavering dedication. She earned her bachelor's degree in biology from the University of North Carolina at Charlotte. Later in life, she joined the Charlotte alumni chapter of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Incorporated, an organization with which she remained passionately involved throughout her life.

Her professional journey was marked by her dedication to justice and truth. Sylvia joined the Mecklenburg Police Department in 2000 as a Crime Scene Investigator and advanced to serve with distinction as an investigator for the Federal Public Defender of the Western District of North Carolina. Her work was not only meticulous but also driven by a profound commitment to helping others and ensuring that each client had a voice. Over her 20+ year career, she earned respect from colleagues nationwide for her expertise, compassion, and unwavering integrity.

Those who knew Sylvia will remember her infectious laugh, her quiet strength, her sharp intellect, and her boundless love for her family. She had a way of making everyone feel seen and heard, and her presence was a comforting constant in the lives of those she held dear.

She leaves behind a legacy of service, strength, and love. Sylvia is survived by her husband, Dennis Summers; son, Devin Summers; mother, Jackie Ferguson; two brothers, Donald Ferguson (Elaine) and Rodney Ferguson (Felicia); and a host of nieces, nephews, extended family members, sorority sisters, colleagues, and cherished friends.

Services will be held on August 1, 2025 at 12p at East White Oak Baptist Church located at 1815 Water Street Greensboro, NC 27405. Family will receive visitors 30 minutes prior to the service.
