I first met George Hess in 1963 when we were freshmen at Ohio Wesleyan University. From the very beginning, George stood out-not because he sought attention, but because his warmth, big smile, and boundless good nature naturally drew people to him. He was a good friend, a talented manager, great fun to be around, and he brought joy to every group he was part of.
Even as students, George and I found ourselves working together, coordinating events between our fraternities. He genuinely enjoyed bringing people together and creating memorable experiences. After college, our paths diverged for a time, but we reconnected in 1978 as senior management colleagues at United Telephone of Ohio. Our professional relationship quickly rekindled into a deep and enduring friendship.
George was a dedicated, hard worker in all his endeavors. He approached both business and community life with determination, follow-through, and a strong sense of responsibility. At the same time, he carried himself with a sophisticated manner that added a special touch to every interaction-thoughtful, gracious, and always composed.
One of the most memorable moments we shared came in 1979, when, motivated by his deep commitment to the Mount Vernon community and the role the Kenyon Theatre program played in enriching it, George helped us host a special event at our home in Mansfield, Ohio. That evening, thanks to his efforts, a remarkable group of rising artists-Treat Williams, Carol Kane, Josh Mostel, and others-performed for friends and neighbors. It´s almost surreal in hindsight that such talent came to our community, and it happened because George believed in fostering the arts and bringing people together.
George´s love for community was matched only by his love for family. In 1980, he married the love of his life, Paula-a wonderful partner and true companion. He often spoke of Paula with great affection, and his greatest joy came from their three sons: Eric, Jeff, and David. He was immensely proud of them, and his face lit up any time he talked about their lives and accomplishments.
Throughout his life, George was a source of energy, joy, and connection. Whether you knew him through business, the arts, friendship, or family, you knew someone who made life better just by being there.

I will always treasure the decades we shared. George´s legacy lives on in the many lives he touched-and in the memories that will continue to bring smiles to those who knew and loved him.
Rest well, my friend.
