Teresa Catherine Colombo
January 11, 1958 – June 11, 2025
Teresa Catherine Colombo passed away peacefully in her sleep on Wednesday night, June 11, 2025, at Calvary Hospital in the Bronx, New York. She was 67 years old. Teresa was a resident at the Truman Home, managed by the Hudson Valley DDSO (Developmental Disabilities Services Office), where she lived from September 16, 2017 until early April, 2025, when she was transferred to Calvary Hospital for palliative care.
Prior to the Truman Home, Teresa resided for around 35 years at the King Street group home in Portchester, New York, also managed by the Hudson Valley DDSO (Developmental Disabilities Services Office). The King Street home was the first residential group home in Westchester County. She moved to King Street from her childhood home when she was in her early 20s, at a time when she was ready to become more independent in her life.
She grew up with her family in Crestwood, New York, doing everything the family did and going everywhere the family went. She attended the Special Education program of the Yonkers, New York public school system where she earned a Special Education high school diploma. Teresa loved animals, especially dogs, and music, especially the Beatles. Her favorite song was 'Hey Jude'. Family and friends were always very important to her. She loved anything social – going to church, going out to eat at the best restaurants and making the waiters smile when she ordered a Dr Pepper, getting a chocolate ice cream and eating it very slowly at a table in a small ice cream shop, picking out new Beatles CDs at the Barnes&Noble not so long ago when they still had a full CD department, visiting with family, attending parties, flying on a plane to visit our aunt and uncle in the Florida Keys or other relatives in Venice Beach, FL, or attending a wedding in San Diego, CA. She was a happy, gutsy, caring person, very aware of her surroundings and people's moods. She knew what she wanted and though her speech was compromised she knew how to make herself understood. She possessed an inherent understanding of the important things in life. Although she could be shy around those she did not know well, she was a people-person and had a great sense of humor and mischief.
She is predeceased by her parents, Joseph and Anita Colombo. She is survived by her sister, Ernestine Colombo.
Teresa's body has been cremated.
