Teresa Francis Hanley (1926 -2024)
Teresa Hanley (nee Scarpulla) formerly of Pearl River, NY, passed away peacefully on December 1st.
She was born in Pearl River on February 25, 1926. The daughter of Leonore and Andrew Scarpulla, Teresa, as a child, lived with her mother and father and aunt and uncle, Sadie and Thomas Scarpulla, at 96 South Main Street. Teresa was the youngest of seven children. She had four sisters, Mary, Josephine, Rosie, and Sarah, and two brothers Sam and Tommy. Throughout her life, Teresa remained extremely close to her sisters and brothers and their extended families.
Teresa graduated from Pearl River High School in 1942 and went to work at Lederle Laboratories, or the "college" as it was called by residents of Pearl River in the 1940s. There she met Thomas Hanley and in storybook fashion they married and raised two children, Ken and Lorraine. Teresa and Tom lived happily in Pearl River for 53 years.
Teresa belonged to Saint Margaret's parish in Pearl River, was an active member of the Rosary Society, and for many years delivered Meals on Wheels. Teresa and Tom spent their later years traveling and helping raise their four grandchildren. Teresa's greatest joy came from spending time with her husband and grandchildren.
Due to Tom's declining health, in 2008, Tom and Teresa moved to Old Bridge, NJ to be near their son, Ken and his wife, Gigi. Teresa took loving care of Tom during his illness. Tom passed away in 2012. The years after her husband's death were difficult for Teresa but she remained active in her community and church. Her faith, which was very important to her, remained a source of comfort and strength.
Teresa is survived by her son, Ken Hanley (and his wife, Gigi Maher) and her daughter, Lorraine Potter (and her husband, Dennis). She is also survived by four grandchildren, two great grandchildren and many nephews and nieces. Teresa will be missed.
Visitation will be held on Tuesday December 3rd from 9:00AM - 10:30AM at the Joseph W. Sorce FH Pearl River, NY and will be followed by a funeral mass at 11:00AM at Saint Margaret's Church, Pearl River NY. Burial to follow at St. Anthony's Cemetery Nanuet, NY
