Terrence "Terry" Joseph Heyn was born on September 19, 1970 in Watertown, SD to Richard "Dick" and Lois (Hoff) Heyn. He was raised on the family farm in rural Goodwin with this 5 brothers and 1 sister. He learned hard work and discipline at a young age, which he took with him throughout his life.
Terry was baptized and confirmed at Holy Rosary Church in Kranzburg, SD. He attended grade school at Holy Rosary, middle school in Clear Lake and finished his education at Watertown High School in 1988. Following graduation, he joined the Army National Guard and completed 4 years of service. He achieved Specialist E-4 during the time he spent serving our great nation.
The legacy of his admirable work ethic started in 1988 at Angus Industries. Through his 28 years of employment starting as a welder, he worked his way into a managerial position in the robotic welding department. His expectations for excellence in all aspects of life produced unequivocal loyalty and respect from those who knew and worked for him.
As a young man, working to pave his way Terry met Angela Kannas, the love of his life. They were married on November 8th, 1997 and began to build a life together north of Castlewood, SD which would later become known to many as "the shop". They raised three intelligent, honorable and handsome young men Justin Terrence, Bradley Allan and Adam Joseph in the Castlewood community. Family was the most important thing he held near and dear to his heart.
While working for Angus Palm, Terry took on aspirations of owning his own business and started sandblasting out of his humble Quonset located on his property. This would later enable him to build his welding shop and Heyner Welding and Sandblasting was born. His business evolved over the years to finally be known as Heyner Welding Inc. Ironically, incorporated included many trades and practices. It was well known that Terry was not afraid to take on any new business challenge.
As if he wasn't already busy enough, one of his last business endeavors was the purchase of Ship's Inn Bar and Grill in Castlewood. With a goal to teach his son's how to manage a business and an influence from Grandma Lois's love of cooking food for the masses, he and his family successfully grew the "Ship" into what it is today; a successful bar and eating establishment where you can get his signature prime rib on Saturday nights. Oh.then by the way, he added catering and party buses to the gig. When Terry would dream up new ideas at the last second before an already planned event (this was common), Angela would tell him "Terry, we can't boil the ocean", but to Terry, can't wasn't a word in his vocabulary. Can't was a challenge.
Friends and family would refer to Terry as the "busiest man" in South Dakota. "We are burning daylight" or "you can sleep when you're dead" were some of the encouraging orders he would bark at people who weren't moving fast enough for him. Ironically, early in his marriage he was the one who could never wake up to an alarm clock! But no matter how busy he was with his own work, if someone needed him, he would drop what he was doing and say yes without hesitation. Terry was known as the biggest hard ass but also the softest soul who had empathy for others feelings and struggles. Terry was a straight shooter who would let you know when things weren't quite right. He would never speak ill of anyone or talk about anyone's secrets that were entrusted to him. He had very high expectations for the people that he loved the most and pushed them to their highest potential. The funny thing is, the more he picked on you the more he liked you. If you were lucky enough to acquire one of his special nicknames, you knew you were one of his own. Terry had many hobbies throughout his life including softball, racquetball, drag racing snowmobiles, flying his ultralight, hunting, fishing, golf, watching the Vikings lose, and experimenting in the kitchen.
Grateful for sharing his life are his wife Angela of 25+ years, three sons Justin, Bradley, Adam and his guard dog Tito of Castlewood. He is survived by father Richard Heyn and special friend Lil Jutting of Watertown; Siblings Jim (Lisa) Heyn of Watertown, Randy Heyn of Bemis, JoLynne (Marty) Mack of Watertown, Steve (Jodi) Heyn of Chester, Leon (Tracy) Heyn of Harrisburg, and Kenny (Jenny) Heyn of Watertown, Mother-in-law Sheryl Ward of Castlewood, SD, Father-in-law Allan Kannas and special friend Maryl Bach of Watertown, SD, Sister-in-law Susie (Lonnie) Phipps of Watertown, Brother-in-law Arlan (Stephanie) Kannas of Ralph, AL; numerous aunts, uncles, nieces, nephews, and cousins.
He was preceded in death by his mother Lois (Hoff) Heyn; Grandparents, Nick and Clara Hoff and Vincent (Jim) and Myrtle Heyn, and a special family friend, Les "Cheeto" Lemke.
