Terry Withers Obituary

Obituary published on Legacy.com by Blackburn & Ward Funeral Home on Mar. 10, 2026.
Terry Shingleton Withers, 69, of Versailles, Kentucky, passed away on March 9, 2026.

Born in Cynthiana, Kentucky, Terry grew up in Lexington and lived a life marked by service, faith, and a deep love for the theatrical arts. He honorably served on active duty in the United States Army, attaining the rank of Sergeant while stationed in South Korea. Following his military service, Terry joined the federal civil service, working with the Department of the Army in Huntsville, Alabama.

Terry was a graduate of Eastern Kentucky University and later pursued formal training in the performing arts at The Drama Studio London at Berkeley, California. His acting career and love of the stage took him from Wilderness Road in Kentucky to California, Chicago, Lexington, and ultimately Versailles, Kentucky.

A devoted member and elder of Troy Presbyterian Church, Terry faithfully served his church community in many ways, including singing in the choir and volunteering with Vacation Bible School and children's programs.

Terry was especially known in the local arts community for his dedication to Woodford Theatre, where he appeared in 32 productions over the years. His final performance with the theatre was in one of his childhood favorites, The Wizard of Oz, where he portrayed the Wizard. Through his performances and storytelling, Terry brought joy, creativity, and inspiration to audiences and fellow actors alike.

Terry was preceded in death by his mother, Mary D Shingleton Withers.

He is survived by his father, Don Withers; his brothers, Michael Withers, David Withers, and Charles (Becky) Withers; and his sister, Mary Don Coyle. He was the beloved uncle of Kelly (Matt), Andrew (Kristin), Roy (Katherine), Celeste (Daniel), Matthew (Jordan), and John Paul. He was also the proud great-uncle of Mattison, Kaden, Charlotte, Ella, Sloane, Mallory, Taylor Don, Emory, Violet, Ike, John Elliott, and Jack.

Terry will be remembered fondly for his love of family, his passion for the theatrical arts, and his remarkable ability to tell an epic story.

In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to Woodford Theatre, 275 Beasley Dr., Versailles, KY 40383.

Though the curtain has fallen on Terry's earthly stage, the stories he shared and the lives he touched will continue to inspire all who knew him.

And just as the Wizard floated away in his balloon at the end of The Wizard of Oz, we imagine Terry tipping his hat and calling out one last time, "Goodbye folks!"

Until we meet again, our dear and beloved.

Funeral Services will be conducted at 2:00 pm on Thursday, March 12, 2026, at Troy Presbyterian Church with Rev. Susan Warren Officiating. Visitation will be held from 11:00 am until the time of the service. Private family burial will be held at Battle Grove Cemetery, Cynthiana, Kentucky. Family and friends are encouraged to share memories and leave messages of condolence on Terry's tribute wall at www.BlackburnandWard.com.

Earlier today

I met Terry last March in the production of "The Wizard of Oz." He was a dear friend of mine and he taught me so much. He stayed with me and told me his stories about his life and they made us laugh so hard that our stomachs were hurting. I will miss him dearly.

Yesterday

I will miss Terry and was always interested in what was going on in his life. For a few years I would see him every week but lately not as often but we would always share what was going on in our lives. He was such a good friend.
