Theodore Meggett, affectionately known as "Ted or Teddy," was born on March 31, 1936 in Connellsville, PA to the late Lila Belle (Bowers) Meggett and Ivy Meggett, Sr. While growing up in the coal-mining town of Uniontown, PA (in the little community of Oliver), from a young age, Ted carried a deep sense of purpose, which led him to enlist in the United States Air Force (USAF) in June 1954.
Ted proudly served for 20+ years, achieving the rank of Technical Sergeant. He served in the military as an aircraft life support equipment specialist and supervisor at multiple locations around the country and world, including Seward AFB (Tennessee), McGuire AFB (New Jersey), Ellsworth AFB (South Dakota), South Korea, Philippines, Bermuda, and of course Hampton, VA at Langley AFB where he eventually retired from the Air Force. Tech Sergeant Theodore Meggett served during the Vietnam War era making sure pilots and navigators had the proper protective gear. His favorite aircraft that he liked to work with was the huge C-130 cargo plane. He was also part of search and rescue teams when astronauts landed back down to earth in the ocean in their space capsules in the 1960's and early 70's. Tech Sergeant Meggett received numerous commendations, including the National Defense Service Medal, Air Force Commendation Medal, Air Force Longevity Service Award, and Air Force Outstanding Unit Award. He retired from the Air Force in 1975 with an Honorable Discharge.
Ted met and married the love of his life, an island girl named Marilyn Bean, while he was stationed at Kindley AFB in Bermuda. Their marriage lasted for 56 wonderful years and from this union came two sons: Todd and Trevor. After his military retirement in Hampton, VA, he worked for a few years for the Howmet Corporation as a machinist and supervisor for manufacturing airplane engine components, and then he worked as a courier with Sentara Careplex Hospital, formerly known as Sentara General Hospital. He was able to retire from Sentara after 16 years of serving and delivering at several locations within the hospital community.
Though Ted didn't speak of faith often, he lived with a quiet dignity and a strong sense of purpose. Known for his steady presence, being a hard worker, his friendliness and sharp wit, Ted enjoyed working on his cars, teaching new tricks to the family dog, walking around the neighborhood for exercise, and hanging out with his buddies at a local convenience store. Last and certainly not least, being from western Pennsylvania, he loved cheering on his favorite football team....the Pittsburgh Steelers. Most of all, Ted was an amazing husband, father, grandfather, uncle, cousin, friend, and man.
Ted transitioned on Sunday, June 1, 2025, at the age of 89. He is survived by his wife: Marilyn (Bean) Meggett; two loving sons: Todd Meggett (wife Dana) and Trevor Meggett; grandchildren: Leilani, Zackary, Tryndee, and Treywen. He is also survived by his many in-laws. He leaves behind a host of nieces, nephews, extended family, and friends.
Ted was the youngest of 5 siblings who all preceded him in death: Ethel Cartwright, Myrtle Gray, Dorothy "Dot" Harris, Nellie Washington, and Ivy Meggett, Jr.
The Meggett family has entrusted his final care to C.C. Carter Funeral Home. The family would like to thank everyone for all acts of kindness. Please continue to keep them in your thoughts and prayers.
