Thomas J. Abernathy passed away peacefully on September 17, 2025. Tom will be remembered for being the kindest, most gentle person, and an amazing and loving husband, dad, brother, and friend. Tom retired as the fire Lieutenant for the Ruidoso Fire Department, and a retired security guard with the Inn of the Mountain Gods. He enjoyed serving his community and watching the wildlife.
Tom is survived by his loving wife of 60 years, Donna L. Abernathy; son, Thomas H. Abernathy; daughter, Tania L. Proctor; grandchildren, Benjamin Abernathy and Jaydyn Abernathy; sisters, Terri Adelman, Toni Cartwright, and Marcia Forrest. He is preceded in death by his mother, Margaret Abernathy; father, H.L. Abernathy; sister, Mary Hope Whitmire.
He was truly loved and will be dearly missed.
A celebration of Tom's life will be held on Saturday, September 27th at 10:00 AM at LaGrone Funeral Chapel of Ruidoso with visitation to begin at 9:00 AM.
