Michael Anthony Abernathy Sr., known for his love of the great outdoors, and his deep love for his kids, Michael passed away on September 30, 2025, at the age of 48, after a courageous year-long battle with cancer. He fought hard—just like he lived—on his own terms and with quiet strength.
Born on January 7, 1977, Michael was the kind of guy who found peace in a fishing boat and joy in a deer stand. Hunting and fishing weren’t just hobbies—they were a way of life, and he loved sharing that life with the people who mattered most to him.
Most of all, Michael was a dad who loved big. His children—Ansley, Charlotte, Michael II. "Deuce", and Leonard "Leo"—were the pride of his life, and everything he did was for them. Whether it was teaching them how to cast a line, cheering them on, or just being present, he made sure they always knew how deeply they were loved.
Michael is survived by his children, as well as his father Gerald Abernathy, his mother Mylyne Abernathy, his sister Maria Brinkley (Phil), and his brother Marty Abernathy (Sabrina). He also leaves behind several beloved nieces and nephews who brought him joy and laughter over the years. His presence, sense of humor, and big heart will be missed more than words can say.
A Funeral Service for Michael will be held Saturday, October 4, 2025, 2:00 P.M., at the Chapel of Caldwell & Cowan, 1215 Access Road, in Covington, with interment following in Lawnwood Memorial Park. Friends are invited to visit with the family at the funeral home Friday, October 3, from 5:00 - 8:00 P.M.
