Thomas M. Bethoney, affectionately known as Tommy to his loved ones, passed away peacefully on May 22, 2024, at the age of 96 in
Norton, MA. Born on March 27, 1928, in Boston, MA, Tommy was a man whose life was defined by dedication, love, and service, leaving behind a legacy that will be cherished by all who knew him.
Tommy was the devoted husband of the late Rose M. Bethoney (Maroun), with whom he shared 75 years of unwavering partnership and love. He was the son of the late Mansour and Sarah Bethoney, and a cherished brother to his many siblings, his brothers James, Steven, Michael, George, Sabey, Ernest, and Joseph and his sisters Jennie Carter, Eva Bethoney, Saidee Murad and Milady Sosna, all of whom preceded him in death. A devoted father, he is survived by his children, Matthew Bethoney Sr and his wife Marie of Sharon, and Jennifer Soderquist and her husband Brian of Norton. He was a loving "Giddo" to his grandchildren Nicole, Matt Jr., Frank, Angela, Brian, and Alex, and a doting great-grandfather to Angelia, Weston, Isabella, Thomas, Lena, Alex Jr., Rozzie, Max, and Jaxson. Tommy's extended family of nieces, nephews, in-laws, and friends will hold his memory dear.
A proud graduate of Boston English High School, Class of 1945, Tommy's sense of duty led him to serve his country not once, but twice. He was first enlisted into the United States Navy, where he served for a year until the end of World War II. His commitment to his nation called him back to service in 1950 when he was drafted by the United States Army and served time in Korea until 1953. For his marksmanship, he was awarded a Sharp Shooting Medal, an accolade that spoke to his dedication and skill.
Upon returning to civilian life, Tommy spent time in his career as an Instrument Mounter for a Valve Assembly Company in Avon, working for the Masoneilon Company. He dedicated approximately 25 years to the company before retiring, leaving behind a legacy of hard work and reliability.
Tommy's interests were as rich and varied as his life. He had a deep love for flowers and orchids, spending countless hours tending to his garden. His passion for nature was only matched by his love for his family and his faith. He and his beloved wife, Rose, spent many joyous days in
Boynton Beach, Florida, where they were active in their church community. Tommy and Rose helped as founders who helped build Mary Mother of Perpetual Light Church in
Lake Worth, Florida, and he contributed to Our Lady of Cedars of Lebanon church in Jamaica Plain alongside Rose.
An avid Boston sports fan, Tommy's enthusiasm for the Patriots was legendary. He proudly held season tickets dating back to the team's early days at Schaefer Stadium, witnessing the birth of a dynasty. But above all, Tommy treasured the time he spent with his grandchildren, imparting wisdom and creating memories that will last for generations.
Tommy was a man of loving kindness and courage, whose presence uplifted those around him. His actions spoke volumes of the man he was-selfless, dedicated, and always ready to lend a helping hand. He will be remembered not only for the life he led but also for the countless lives he touched.
Thomas M. Bethoney lived a life full of purpose and love, and though he may have left this world, his spirit will continue to inspire all who were fortunate enough to have known him. His story is one of unwavering commitment to his family, his country, and his community-a story that will be told with pride and affection by those who carry his legacy forward.
