Pastor Thomas Lee Broom, III was called home to be with his Lord and Savior on Saturday, November 9, 2024.
Thomas was born on September 1, 1996 in Pineville, NC. He was an avid hunter, fisherman, athlete, and barbecue chef. He faithfully loved his wife, family, church, friends, and community. Above all of these, Thomas loved and treasured his Savior. In college, Thomas began to understand that the God who created him is holy, loving, and just. Because Thomas was created, he was owned. The God who made him describes Himself in Exodus 34 as a God "merciful and gracious, slow to anger, abounding in steadfast love but who will by no means leave the guilty unpunished." Thomas understood that he, along with all humanity, had rebelled against this holy God and deserved His punishment. However, the hope of the gospel captivated and changed him. Out of God's great love for us, He sent Jesus to earth to live a perfect life, die to receive punishment for our sins, and rise again as King forever. Thomas then turned and put his hope for forgiveness fully in Christ's perfect life, death, and resurrection. Thomas believed, as Scripture makes clear, that we owe God our very lives. He lived for Him daily, prayerfully, and sought Him fervently. God called him to ministry and he faithfully shepherded the people of God at Grace Chapel Baptist in York for two years. The beat of his heart and purpose of his life was to help others, especially in York County, fully understand the beautiful gospel that was, and is, his hope.
While running the Run for Life 5K, Thomas was called home to be with the One he loved and lived for. His family and friends take comfort in the last words he spoke during his final Sunday preaching at church:
"For I am already being poured out as a drink offering, and the time of my departure has come. I have fought the good fight, I have finished the race, I have kept the faith. Henceforth there is laid up for me the crown of righteousness, which the Lord, the righteous judge, will award to me on that day, and not only to me but also to all who have loved his appearing." 2 Timothy 4:6-8
He is survived by his wife, Erica Faith Broom; his parents, Lee and Ann Broom; his mother and father-in-law, Cathy and Mike Williamson; his grandmother, Phyllis Broom; his sister-in-law, Briana Williamson; his aunts, Gayle Dover (Leslie), Phyllis Putnam (Michael); his uncle, Alan Putnam; and many cousins and friends. Thomas was preceded in death by his grandfathers, Thomas Lee Broom, Sr. and Roy Putnam and his grandmother, Irene Putnam.
