Thomas Francis Callahan, Jr., affectionately known to so many as "Coach Cal," passed away on January 4, 2026, in
Rowlett, Texas, at the age of 72. He was born on October 9, 1953, in
New Haven, Connecticut, where his roots were planted and his lifelong devotion to faith, family, and football began. A man of deep conviction, boundless humor, and a rhythmic soul, Tom moved through life guided by a simple, yet powerful principle–"Faith, Family, and Football"--a creed that shaped how he lived, loved, and led.
Tom was a passionate educator and football coach whose impact reached far beyond the classroom and the field. Coaching was never just about the game for him-it was about shaping young lives, building character, and teaching lessons that lasted long after the final whistle.
To his players, he was zealous and tough–a motivator and mentor who wholeheartedly invested in their lives and their futures. He demanded excellence, but he gave even more of himself in return, leaving a profound and lasting influence on countless young men who were lucky enough to call him Coach. To his friends, he was truly "the life of the party"-a natural storyteller who could always make you laugh, often with a joke, a song, or even a look. To his family, Tom was the definition of dedication. Of all of his achievements, none mattered more to Tom than being a devoted father to his four children.
Tom had a deep love for sports and music, whether he was coaching on the sidelines, cheering from the stands, or sharing his favorite songs. His energy was infectious, his laughter unmistakable, and his presence unforgettable.
He is survived by his children: Brittany Callahan Willis and her husband Hank Willis; Meagan Callahan; Thomas Callahan and his wife Lauren Callahan; Kyle Callahan and his wife Emily Callahan; and his grandchildren: Berkley Willis, Boston Willis, and Charlotte Callahan. He is also survived by his dear friend and former wife, Patricia Callahan. Tom was preceded in death by his beloved parents, Thomas Francis Callahan, Sr. and Mary Irene Callahan, whom he loved deeply and carried in his heart always.
A visitation will be held on Tuesday, January 20th, from 5:00-7:00 p.m. at Rest Haven Funeral Home in
Rowlett, Texas. A memorial mass will follow on Wednesday, January 21st, at St. Joseph Catholic Church in Richardson, Texas. The rosary will precede the mass at 10:00 a.m., and the mass will begin at 10:30 a.m.

St. Jude Children's Research Hospital.
Coach Cal's legacy lives on in his family, his players, and the countless lives he touched with his faith, laughter, and unwavering heart. He will be deeply missed, fondly remembered, and forever loved.
