Gene Capener, a devoted husband, father, grandfather, father-in-law, and friend, passed away on January 28th. He was the beloved husband of Marilyn Capener and a loving father to John and Nancy Capener and is remembered fondly by family and friends.
Gene lived in Orinda with his wonderful wife for 46 years of marriage, creating a life filled with cherished routines and family memories. He loved working in his yard and in the garage making planter boxes, changing the oil, or waxing the cars. He loved the two different dogs (Heidi and Mandy) growing up and he always made time for playing tug a war with his leather gloves (that were always falling out of his back pocket). He was always working on projects in the garage or looking for a new tool to use in the yard. The family attended mass every Sunday and Gene involved himself further in the church by becoming an usher.
Gene's career was working at Matson for 35 years of service, known as the "Super Cargo of ships!" He directed the operations of unloading and loading cargo ships. He also created software programs that they are still using today.
Gene was known for his sharp wit, making amazing dry martinis for the annual fourth of July or New Year's Eve parties. He also learned morse code to become an amateur radio operator. His call sign was WW6H which he loved so much he put on his license plate. He spent about 35 years with the Contra Costa Repeater Association (CCRA) club. Attending monthly meetings and checking in on Monday nights to also give countless hours to volunteer, helping to grow the club and working with others assisting them in getting their license. He created many lifelong friendships.
When he retired, he continued going to many Cal football games and A's games with friends. He helped community members around town use a computer and help reach out to their loved ones through email. Becoming a grandpa was an exciting time for him to share what he loved with the grandkids by making popcorn on the stove, enjoying root beer floats, and telling stories. Gene and Marilyn took the grandkids too Disneyland. They treasured the times spent with him in these last few years, and he leaves a lasting legacy in both the Orinda/Morage community and the Danville community that he resided in the last few years of his life.
Gene's gentle spirit, devotion to family, and the joy he brought to others' lives will remain forever in the hearts of those who loved him.
