Thomas Joseph "Tom" Egan, of Kittery, Maine, passed away peacefully on November 11, 2025, in the comfort and love of his family after a valiant battle with cancer.
Throughout his life, Tom earned a reputation for his warmth, generosity, and genuine connection with others. He had an extraordinary gift for putting people at ease and making each person feel valued and cherished. His kindness, charm, and boundless positive energy left a lasting impression on everyone he met. He will be deeply missed and forever loved.
Tom had a very full and happy childhood. Born on January 9, 1957, at Westchester Square Hospital in Bronx, NY, to the late Gerard F. Egan and Rita L. (McLoughlin) Egan of the Bronx, NY, and later
Falmouth, MA, he was the fourth of seven children. Tom spent his formative childhood years in Mahopac, NY, where the Egans were one of several big and vibrant families. Those years were filled with escapades and adventures with his siblings, close school friends, the neighborhood kids and their families. These friendships would remain important to him throughout his life.
As a child, Tom enjoyed playing basketball, fishing, visiting Cape Cod and Bear Mountain with his family, and spending time with his cousins and extended family at the swimming hole in Saugerties, NY and Lake Bomoseen in Vermont. Always a hard worker, he had a paper route, mowed lawns, caddied at a local golf course, pumped gas, and took on many odd jobs throughout high school. After graduating from Mahopac High School in 1975, Tom moved to Ft. Lauderdale, FL where he worked and pursued coursework at a local college. This time period was often reflected upon fondly, and some wonderful lifelong friendships were formed and cemented before his return to New York.
As a young man, Tom aspired to a career in real estate and soon channeled his entrepreneurial spirit into starting his own appraisal business, The Egan Appraisal Company. Through hard work, dedication, and a natural talent for connecting with people, Tom built a reputation for professionalism and integrity. His charisma, sharp mind, and genuine interest in others made him not only successful in business but also deeply respected by clients and colleagues alike. As his career evolved, Tom transitioned into land acquisitions, where his deep knowledge of real estate, strong negotiation skills, and personable nature continued to serve him well. He took pride in his work and approached every project with the same commitment and enthusiasm that had defined his career from the start. In his later years, Tom served as a well-revered property manager, a role he approached with his signature kindness, dedication, and genuine hospitality, earning the respect and gratitude of the tenants, colleagues, and friends throughout the community.
Tom's hobbies and passions reflected his joyful spirit and love for family. He especially loved clamming and fishing, and shared his enthusiasm by helping many of his family members and friends catch their first fish (and many more) with Tom aboard the Patriot Too or the Lola 2, or from the jetties on Cape Cod or in Rhode Island; those not on the trip often still enjoyed the rewards, as he loved distributing the catch to his family, friends, and neighbors. Tom loved music, and his beautiful singing brought light to every gathering. Proud of his Irish roots, he visited Ireland whenever possible and even held dual citizenship. A gifted cook, Tom delighted in preparing meals for family and friends, sharing his love through every dish.
Interwoven with these hobbies, was a life full of meaningful relationships as a brother, son, uncle, cousin, godfather, coach, friend, and, most proudly, as a father and grandfather. He was always happy to lend an ear to someone in need or drop whatever he was doing to help someone. He loved teaching others, whether it be practical skills like making the perfect Irish brown bread or Thanksgiving stuffing, or invaluable life lessons, showing his children and grandchildren the importance of being present, expressing love, and cherishing one another and life itself.
Tom is survived by two sons and a daughter: Tom and wife Kara (Sweeney) of San Francisco, CA; Kate and husband Frank Piffath of Eliot, ME; and Kieran and wife Emily (Keeney) of Portland, ME. He is also survived by 7 grandchildren: Hudson, Ronan, Tommy, Declan, Charlie, Helen, and Margaret.
He also leaves behind his brothers and sisters-in-law: Gerard and Linda Egan of Bristol, CT; Paul and Jacqueline Egan of Carmel, NY; Daniel and Pamela Egan of Chester, VT; Joseph and Suzanne Egan of
Falmouth, MA; Michael and Denise Egan of
Falmouth, MA; as well as 16 nieces and nephews. He is predeceased by his sister, Rita Mary Egan, of New Milford, CT.
Visitation will be held on Friday, November 21, from 4 to 7 pm at Chapman Funerals & Cremations, 475 Main Street,
Falmouth, MA 02540. A Funeral Mass will be celebrated at St. Anthony's Catholic Church, 167 East Falmouth Highway (Route 28), East Falmouth at 10:00 am on Saturday, November 22. The family will hold a private service of committal and interment at a future date.
