Obituary of Thomas Joseph Frantzen
Thomas J "Tom" Frantzen, age 62 passed away on June 5, 2025. Tom was a soft, caring, compassionate person. He cared about people and was always talking kindly to others and offering his support.
Tom loved animals, children, nature, and flowers. He always enjoyed going for walks, watching children play, and admiring people's flowers. Tom enjoyed sitting in the yard watching the squirrels, chipmunks, birds, and insects.
During his high school years at Duluth Central he excelled in Debate and was asked to join debate at Macalester College in St. Paul. After high school graduation, Tom moved to St. Paul for Macalester College and to spend his adult years until dementia struck.
After graduating from Macalester, Tom worked for Mayor Latimer. He also worked for the United Way and the Boyscouts. He did some traveling as a speaker for Fred Pryor. Then Tom became an entrepreneur. He spent many years owning a sports cards and memorbilia store going to sports cards shows, and making many good friends.
Tom was loved and will be dearly misssed.
Tom is preceded in death by his mother Judy, and his uncle "Skip". He is survived by his sister Kim, brother Mark (Traci), aunts, an uncle, nieces, and other family and friends.
Thank you to St. Croix Hospice and everyone who cared about and cared for Tom.

Tom and I were childhood friends who lived across the street from each other in the 5th street neighborhood of Duluth in the 60s. Along with his brother Mark we formed a trio that played together and grew up together.

Time passed and after a few moves to different apartments (for both families) we saw less of each other, though we never forgot our friendship. We were the kind of friends each other could always count on to always have our backs regardless of the situation.

I left Duluth and entered Macalester in 1978. In 1982 during the last week of classes a young man came up to me in the Mac library and said my name. I asked how he knew it. He introduced himself as Tom Frantzen and I was floored to find out he had been on campus as a freshman for an entire year. I'm still not sure how we never ran into each other beforehand since the campus is not large.

Mark and Kim, I have so many good memories of those years and Tom remains a huge part of them. Though I am shocked and saddened by his sudden (and far too early) passing, he will always remain in my conscience as the nice, funny, brown-haired boy who became one of my best friends.
