Thomas Newton Gammon, age 87, of Mount Zion, Georgia, peacefully passed away on Wednesday, March 12, 2025. He was born on December 29, 1937, in the warmth of his family's home in Mount Zion, the cherished son of the late T.H. Gammon and Ruth Entrekin Gammon.
Thomas graduated from Mount Zion High School, where he laid the foundation for his bright future. He then pursued a business degree at Berry College in Rome, Georgia, where he met the love of his life, Audrey Starnes. Their love story blossomed, leading to a joyful marriage that spanned an incredible 60 years, filled with laughter, love, and the warmth of family as they raised their three daughters in the vibrant community of Powder Springs, Georgia.
After earning his degree, Thomas proudly served his country in the United States Marine Corps Reserve. He embarked on a career in Data Processing at Life of Georgia during the dawn of the computer age, where he worked diligently for 35 years before retiring. Each day brought new challenges and triumphs, and Thomas thrived in this rapidly evolving field.
Upon retiring, Thomas and Audrey sought new adventures, relocating to the picturesque town of Waynesville, North Carolina. He embraced his passion for golf there, dedicating 20 years to the Lake Junaluska Golf Course. Thomas was not just an avid golfer with a low handicap, he genuinely loved the game. He relished his time in the pro shop, sharing stories and tips with fellow golf enthusiasts while mentoring the next generation of players.
A devoted family man, Thomas's deep love for his wife and daughters ultimately drew him back to his roots in Mount Zion, where he could be closer to his beloved family. He was a devoted husband, a nurturing father, a steadfast friend, and a man of remarkable integrity and gentle strength. His reliability and commitment to his word were qualities that truly defined him. Thomas possessed a remarkable gift for storytelling, effortlessly weaving captivating tales that enthralled his family and friends. His legendary stories, brimming with vivid details of his life and thrilling adventures, became cherished favorites, often requested time and again.
Faith was a cornerstone of Thomas's life. As a devoted member of the Methodist Church, he lived with a steadfast belief in his Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ. He actively contributed to church work and supported various missions, embodying the values of generosity and compassion.
Thomas leaves behind a loving and devoted family that includes his cherished daughters and sons-in-law: Jennifer and Terry Jones, Shana and Robert Wegner, and April Laughter. He is also survived by his sisters, Jane Cammons and Nancy Hudgins; his beloved grandchildren: Emily and J.J. Thornton, Thomas Wegner, Will and Erica Jones, Natalie and Paul VanWingerden, and Sullivan Cordell; a precious great-granddaughter, Eliana Joy Thornton; as well as many nieces and nephews who will miss him dearly.
In addition to his parents, Thomas was preceded in death by his beloved wife, Audrey Starnes Gammon; his brother, George Gammon; and his brother-in-law, Steve Hudgins.
To honor and celebrate his remarkable life, a heartfelt funeral service will be held on Sunday, March 16, 2025, at 3:00 PM in the Chapel of Martin & Hightower Funeral Home, with Pastor Dwayne Terry officiating. A private family interment will follow in the Mt. Zion United Methodist Church Cemetery.
The family will welcome friends and loved ones to the funeral home on Sunday, beginning at 1:00 PM and continuing until the time of service.
