1941 - 2025
Thomas Hein age 84 of Metz passed away peacefully at home surrounded by his family on August 26, 2025.
He was born in Metz to Harry and Irene (Richard) Hein on February 23, 1941.
Following the untimely death of his father, Tom at the age of 16 assumed the role as the family father figure. After graduating from Rogers City High School in 1959, he began working at Calcite, retiring as an electrician in 1995 after 36 years of service. For the next 26 years, he worked at the Krueger Seed Farm as a truck driver during fall harvest. On August 4, 1962 he married Anna Krajniak at St. Casimir Catholic Church. Tom was an avid outdoorsman from November deer hunting to winter rabbit and coyote hunting. His workshop was a gathering place for many years where you could count on hearing the same debate on how to skin a deer. Tom instilled a strong work ethic in his children and grandchildren. When Tom got home from work it was all work and no play, there was always something to be done from cutting and stacking firewood, planting and weeding the gardens, and working in the yard. Tom was very involved in his community and church. He was a member of the Knights of Columbus, a Metz Township Trustee for 54 years and he looked forward to working in the Posen Pavilion every September making potato pancakes. His family and friends meant the world to him, he took great pride that his family got along so well. Tom's family is grateful to Dr. Hitzelberger and Hospice of Michigan for giving them 4 additional years with him after his cancer returned.
Tom is survived by his wife, Anna; five children, Barbara (Rob) Love, Tammy Greenman, Denise (Paul) Kowalewsky, Scott (MaryJo) Hein and Shannon (Wayne) Saile; 12 grandchildren, Anna, Sam, Lydia, Max, Megan, Dustin, Jacob (Veronica), Isaac, Alyssa, Alexis, Jazmyn and Brooke; three great grandchildren, Noah, Hudson and Colby; five siblings, Connie, David, Susan, Robert and Peggy.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Harry and Irene; grandson, Wyatt; son-in-law, Bob Greenman; and siblings, Yvonne, Roger, Judy and Mary Jane.
Friends may visit at St. Dominic Catholic Church on Saturday, August 30th from 10 a.m. through time of Mass at 11 a.m. with Fr. Charlie Donajkowski officiating.
Interment will follow at St. Dominic Catholic Cemetery.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be given to St. Dominic Catholic Church in memory of Thomas Hein.
