Thomas W. Johnston, fondly known as Tommy to his loved ones, passed away on July 24, 2025, at the age of 72. Born to Joel and Anita Johnston on July 10, 1953, Tommy was the cornerstone of his family, a man whose compassionate heart and tireless work ethic were admired by all who knew him.
Tommy graduated from Morgan County High School and immediately went into the National Guard. With skilled hands and a sharp mind, he dedicated many years to serving local industries, including Hercules, Weyerhaeuser, and Rock-Tenn, where his contributions were invaluable. His work was not just a job; it was a testament to his commitment to excellence and the betterment of his community.
At home, Tommy was a cherished husband to Debra Johnston, creating an enduring partnership that was the bedrock of their family. Together they had a beautiful family which included their children, Tina Lankford-Little (Joe), Angela Ellis (Thomas), Shane Johnston (Heather), and Kimberly Wilson (Thomas). He took immense pride in guiding and observing their growth, instilling in them the values of hard work and kindness that he himself upheld. Tommy's joy multiplied as he became a loving grandfather to Allison, Britney, Kelsey, Nathan, Alex, Andrew, Aiden, and Braelynn, and a doting great-grandfather to young Wyatt.
An embodiment of creativity and practical skill, Tommy enjoyed working with his hands and was a talented woodworker. He had a love for the outdoors, whether it was while cutting grass under the Georgia sun, fishing in the tranquil lakes, or feeling the freedom of the open road on his motorcycle - Tommy lived his life with an enduring sense of adventure and joy.
Described by those who knew him best as a handy, creative, and thoughtful man, Tommy's legacy is one of love, dedication, and humble service. He leaves behind his devoted brothers, Joey, Alan, and Jeffrey Johnston, his loving sister, Sherry Marshall, and numerous nieces, nephews, other family members, and close friends-all of whom will miss his infectious laughter and sage advice.
While the family grieves for their loss, they take comfort in knowing that Tommy is now reunited with his parents, Joel and Anita Johnston, as well as his sister, Marsha Johnston, in eternal peace.
Tommy lived a life rich in love and experiences, a life well-lived and well-loved. As we bid him farewell, we celebrate the unmistakable mark he left on this world and in our hearts. He will be profoundly missed, yet his spirit will continue to inspire all those he touched for generations to come.

A funeral service for Mr. Johnston will be held at 3 o'clock Sunday, July 27, 2025 at the Chapel of J.C. Harwell and Son Funeral Home. The family will receive at the funeral home from 1:00 PM until 3:00 PM on Sunday prior to the service.
