Thomas Kavanagh Obituary

Obituary published on Legacy.com by Joseph J Smith Funeral Home Inc on Dec. 16, 2025.
Thomas J. "TK" Kavanagh, of Mahopac, NY, passed away peacefully on December 14, 2025, at the age of 78. He was born on March 3, 1947, in Manhattan, son of the late Joseph and Ann (née Breginzer) Kavanagh.
TK grew up in the Washington Heights section of Manhattan, where he cultivated a lifelong love for rock n' roll, attending countless concerts and following the careers of legends like Bob Dylan and the Grateful Dead. His passion for music was only rivaled by his love for baseball, particularly his adoration for the New York Yankees. Yet, his appreciation for the sport extended beyond his favorite team, as he celebrated the talents of players across the league.
After moving to Mahopac in 1981, TK was a teacher at Cardinal Hayes High School in the Bronx. His dedication to education was evident in his pursuit of a Masters of Education, which he utilized to inspire and shape the minds of countless students throughout his career.
TK is survived by his loving wife, Erna "Dottie" Kavanagh, whom he married on August 24, 2012. He was a proud father to his daughter, Liz Mariconda, and her husband Paul, and a doting "Pa" to his grandchildren, AJ, Lily, Kasyn, and Aljabar. He is also survived by his step-daughters, Kaysia and Syreta; his brother, Joseph and his wife Sheila; and many special friends that he considered family. TK was predeceased by his first wife, Maureen, in July of 1994.
All are welcome to attend a visitation on Thursday, December 18th from 4-8PM at the Joseph J. Smith Funeral Home in Mahopac, NY. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Friday, December 19th at 10AM at St. John The Evangelist Church, also in Mahopac. Interment will follow at Gate of Heaven Cemetery in Hawthorne.
