Thomas Lingelbach Obituary

Thomas E. Lingelbach passed away peacefully in California on Jan. 6, 2026, surrounded by family. Born Sept. 28, 1959, in New Kensington to Joan and the late Walter Lingelbach, Tom lived a life defined by curiosity, intelligence, humor, and lasting connection to family and friends. A 1981 graduate of the Pennsylvania State University, Tom built his professional career as a software controls engineer, consulting on complex public and private utility and manufacturing projects with companies including Babcock & Wilcox, Baxter, Duke Energy, and Emerson. Outside of work, Tom created lasting memories with family and friends at destinations including Mentor on the Lake, Lake Norman, Dillon, Ocean Isle Beach, San Diego, and most recently Oahu—each gathering marked by laughter, conversation, and stories that will be told for years. Tom also shared his love for science and technology, along with hands-on adventures involving wine, cider, bots, beach gear, and gardening/hydroponics, pursuits that perfectly reflected his inventive spirit and sense of fun. Tom is survived by his mother, Joan; his sisters, Judy (Bill) Paulsworth, Amy (Mark) Magee, and Debbie (Scott Wilshire) Lingelbach; his brother, David (Johna) Lingelbach; nieces, Ashley Paulsworth and Miranda (Steve) Sawa; nephews, Chris Paulsworth, Kyle Paulsworth, DJ (Rachel) Lingelbach, Jake Brown, and Will Brown; and grandnieces, Charlotte and Lucy. Memorial donations may be made to one's charity of choice. The family will host a Celebration of Life at a later date.

Tom and I went to Penn State Harrisburg campus together to get our BSEE degrees. He lived across the street from me in Mead Heights, the university's dupex-home community, and we had many happy times on campus together.

During my career I had occasion to go to San Diego where Tom lived. I got to see him several times during that period. He was always happy to show me around to the beautiful sights, pubs and micro breweries. He even was a pleasant host and tour guide when I brought my wife and kids to town. I've included a photo of him and me from one such occasion in July 2014.

He had a independent streak in the way he approached life. And while we could not get him to engage with the old college buddies after he moved back to Pittsburgh some years ago, I will miss the occasional exchange we had from across the miles.

Bye Tom. You left us too early.

I fondly remember our ski trips to Colorado, one especially snowy day finished off with a soak in the hot tub while snow accumulated on our heads, steam billowing all around. Tom had a beer in one hand and a cigar in the other and seemed very content. He will be missed.

Tommy. Gone WAY to soon. Good times growing up in New Kensington. And then reconnecting while living in California. Free tickets to the San Diego Chargers games. And the San Diego street scene each and every year. See you next time around buddy.

I met Tom while I was working for Emerson. He was larger than life, yet he was just a regular guy. Tom was so intelligent, but so modest. I am so happy he was able to live the good life. Nobody deserved it more than him. May his blessed soul rest in peace, and may God comfort his loved ones left behind. We've lost a great human being.
