Thomas L. Margeit

Horseheads, New York

Passed away in the comfort of his home on Tuesday, February 10, 2026 at the age of 98. Tom was born on December 26, 1927 in Elmira, NY, a son of the late Ludwig and Catherine Piecuch Margeit.

He is predeceased by his son, Thomas Michael (Judy) Margeit; daughter, Gayle Marie (Ted) Pritchard; and siblings, Hank Margeit and Marie Addabbo.

He is survived by his loving wife of 74 years, Esther Stermer Margeit; children Wendy (Dan) Swearingen and Terry (Julie) Margeit; grandchildren Mark, Amy, Matthew, Michelle Jennifer, Jeremy, Sara, Sean, Jodi, Jay, Samantha, Tammi Jo, and Dylan; 27 great-grandchildren; sister, Louise Oksinski; and several nieces, nephews, cousins, extended family and friends.

He served his country honorably with the US Army during World War II clean-up efforts in Germany, and retired after 31 years from NYS Corrections while also driving for Bill Lewis delivering bulk mail, but his favorite job he held was as an Altar Boy at St. Casimir's. Tom was an excellent baseball player, pitching for the Colonels at Dunn Field and professionally in Geneva, NY, and attended spring training with Jackie Robinson and the Brooklyn Dodgers as a member of their AAA farm team. A devout catholic, and devoted family man, Tom enjoyed traveling the country with his family and spending time in Florida. A friend to everyone, he loved polka music and dancing, and his humor brought joy to those around him. He was a constant supporter of his grandchildren and great-grandchildren in all of their pursuits, and they will deeply miss the encouragement from their "Bumpy."

Tom's legacy as a kind, funny, and supportive presence in the lives of those he loved will be cherished forever.

The family will welcome relatives and friends to St. Mary Our Mother Church, Broad St., Horseheads, NY on Tuesday, February 17, 2026 from 9:00-10:15am. A Mass of Christian Burial will take place after calling at 10:30. He will be laid to rest at Maple Grove Cemetery immediately following.
