Roger Joy

James Roger Joy was born on July 26, 1924 in Connellsville, PA, and returned to his heavenly home on February 11, 2026. He was predeceased by his parents (Frederick and Jeanne Joy), sister (Patricia Joy), brother and sister-in-law (Thomas and Donna Joy), and beloved wife (Jennie). Roger proudly served our country as a heavy bomber pilot in the Army Air Corps during WWII in the South Pacific theater from 1943-1946. After his discharge, Roger attended and graduated from West Virginia University (1950) with a degree in Electrical Engineering. Roger's career involved many engineering and product line developments for the Consumer Products Division of his sole employer, Corning Glass Works. Upon his retirement, Roger devoted his time to many church activities (St. Mary our Mother) including Nocturnal Adoration, Eucharistic Ministry, altar server, Perpetual Adoration, hospital visitation ministry, lector, and parish council. Roger was deeply and lovingly devoted to his Catholic faith, and his life truly modeled his name "Joy"- Jesus first, Others second, Yourself third.

Roger had many varied interests including meteorology, aeronautics, mechanics, history, engineering, medicine, and baseball (Pittsburgh Pirates and St. Louis Cardinals).

Roger married Genevieve V. Zelasko on September 30, 1950, and they devotedly shared 68 years together until her passing in June 2018. Roger was a pillar of faith, love, devotion, and strength to his family. Left to cherish his memory are son Ralph (Jane) Joy, daughter Marianne (Robert) Briggs, granddaughters Katie (Brian) Rosinski and Brienne (Ray) Michels, and great- grandchildren Cole, Reese, and Erin Rosinski, and RJ and Genevieve Michels, as well as many nieces, nephews, and friends. Our family also wishes to thank the staff at Appleridge Senior Living and Bethany Home Care for the loving care of our father.

Please join our family in paying your final respects to Roger from 10 am-10:45 am before his Resurrection Mass at 11 am on Thursday, February 19, 2026 at St. Mary our Mother Catholic Church, 816 W. Broad St., Horseheads, NY. Roger will be buried next to his beloved wife in St. Mary's Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, please consider a donation to St. Mary our Mother Church.
