Thomas was born in Wilmington, son of the late Helen (Russell) and Charles Markward. Thomas graduated from St. Marks High School and went on to become a chef at the Holiday Inn, Embassy Suites, and the Double Tree until his retirement. In his free time, Thomas was quite the handyman and loved the challenge of fixing things. Thomas was also the "unofficial mayor" of Northridge, as he was always sitting outside his house and talking with all his friends and neighbors. In addition to his parents, Thomas was also predeceased brother, Garrett Markward; and son, Alexander Markward.
Thomas is survived by his loving wife, Marianne Markward; daughter, Jennifer Markward; son, Thomas Markward Jr.; stepdaughter, Jessica Maxwell; stepson, Jade Hughes; grandchildren, Tatiana Markward, Aubrey Lewis, Leland Maxwell, and Ella Maxwell; brother, Charles Markward Jr; sister, Susan Fitzwater; and numerous nieces, nephews, and close family friends whom he all loved.
A visitation for Thomas will be held on Tuesday, June 10, 2025, at the Mealey Funeral Home, 2509 Limestone Rd, Wilmington, DE 19808, where friends and family may call from 3-4pm, with a memorial service following at 4pm. Burial will be held privately.

Paul and I are so sad about Tommy. Please accept our sincere condolences. I've known Tom since I was little. He looked out for me when Paul had to be away overnight. I loved waving to him as I left for work and when I came home. And Paul found a good buddy just right across the street. Much love. Michele and Paul Gildea

Tom, I am going to miss you so much, my dear friend. I can´t stop looking for you on your porch when I walk or drive by. Thank you for being such a wonderful, caring friend. Checking up on me when I´m not feeling well. Kicking my butt to see the doctor about my ear. Always having a friendly smile and being so patient with Boone and his craziness. You are still the only human outside our family that he is calm with and truly trusted. Boone knows a good person when he sees one. Thank you for always watching out for Kai when he would walk to and from the bus. I will miss our daily chats and your good humor, and most of all our friendship. You can finally see Hank again. Please give him a big hug and kiss for me...Jai

Every morning, my daughter Ava love to sing to Tom before she goes to school. Tom loved it ,put a smile on his face. He always waves at her. We are all gonna miss you in our special way rest in peace Tom.
