Thomas Mentrup Obituary

Obituary published on Legacy.com by Linnemann Funeral Home - Erlanger on Jan. 2, 2025.
Thomas E. Mentrup, age 89 of Erlanger, Kentucky, passed away peacefully on December 25, 2024, at his home surrounded by his family. Tom was born to the late Felix and Mildred Mentrup on September 11, 1935 in Cincinnati, Ohio.
Tom was a proud Army veteran who recieved a Good Conduct Medal during his service. Tom's career as a law enforcement officer spanned several decades, with service in both Amberley Village and at the Greater Cincinnati Airport. After serving for 15 years in Amberley, he began working his way up to become police chief before transitioning into the role of security administrator at the Airport. After retiring, Tom remained deeply involved in the law enforcement community, volunteering at the Greater Cincinnati Police Museum every Saturday. His passion for preserving the history of local policing was just one reflection of his lifelong commitment to service.
Beyond his professional life, Tom was an avid sports fan, with a deep love for the Cincinnati Bengals and Reds. He could often be found cheering for his favorite teams, sharing his enthusiasm for the games with friends and family.
For over 40 years, Tom was a devoted member of the choir at St. Pius X Church in Erlanger, where his love of music and faith were integral parts of his life.
Tom is preceded in death by his parents, Felix and Mildred Mentrup, and his two grandsons, J.T. Gilreath, and Ryan Nolan.
Tom is survived by his beloved wife, Janet Mentrup; his three daughters, Tracy (Gary) Bamberger, Ellen (Jack) Gilreath, and Karen (Tom) Nolan; his grandchildren, Sara Cahill, Daniel Gilreath, Michael Gilreath, Erin Hoskins, Amanda Huth, and Kati Nolan; his great-grandchildren, Miller Cahill, Carter Cahill, Molly Gilreath, Priscilla Hoskins, Ryleigh Huth, and Kinley Huth; and his sister, Mary Ellen Steffen.
A visitation for Thomas will be held on Thursday, January 2, 2024 at St. Pius X Church from 10:00am-11:00am with a Mass to follow at 11:00am. A private burial will take place the following day.
