Thomas J. Mitchell 86, of
Holmdel, NJ and Palm City, FL, peacefully passed away on October 18 th. He was born in Brooklyn, NY. Tom attended Brooklyn Tech High School and The City College of NY where he studied business and earned a Bachelor of Business Administration degree in accounting and became a Certified Public Accountant. Tom served in the United States Army and Army Reserves. After serving his country he started his career at Ernst & Ernst, later Ernst & Young where he became a Senior Audit Partner and worked there for 38 years. He loved his job.
Tom also enjoyed playing golf at Bamm Hollow country club, Colts Neck Country Club and at Crain Watch in Palm City. FL where he enjoyed spending his winters. He also enjoyed the many family trips to Florida, England, Ireland, Italy, especially meeting his Irish cousin on their last trip to Ireland.
Tom also gave his time to many charitable organizations. He also was a man of deep faith. He was a 4 th degree Knights of Columbus. He was a member of St. Benedict Roman Catholic Church, a member of the St. Vincent De Paul society of St. Catharine Roman Catholic Church, a Eucharist minister at St. Catharine Church. Tom served on the board of the Financial Council of the Dioceses of Brooklyn and Cemetery board. He also served on the Board of Catholic Medical Center in Brooklyn, and the Mary Manning Walsh Nursing Home. Some of his other charity work include being on the board of the ARC of Monmouth, and Victims Services and Safe Horizon. For his work at the Dioceses of Brooklyn, Bishiop Nicholas DiMarzio requested that Tom receive the Pro Ecclesia et Pontifical Cross from Pope Benedict XVI in 2007.
He is predeceased by his father Francis Mitchell, his mother Gertude Pelham Mitchell, and his brother Paul Mitchell. Tom is survived by his wife Joan McCarthy Mitchell, children Robert Mitchell, John Mitchell and Tara Mitchell all of Holmdel, his brother Peter Mitchell and wife Frances Mitchell of Staten Island, sister-in-law Linda Mitchell of Shrewsbury along with many nieces and nephews. He will be greatly missed.
Visitation will be held on Sunday, October 26, 2025 1:00PM-5:00PM at the Holmdel Funeral Home, 26 South Holmdel Road, Holmdel. Mass of Christian burial will be Tuesday, October 28, 2025, 10:00 AM at St. Benedict RC Church, 165 Bethany Road, Holmdel. Burial to follow in St. Gabriel Cemetery, Marlboro.
