Paul Norton
September 20, 2019
Hello, my name is Paul Norton. Sadden to hear of your Dads passing. I was a student at Cortland 1969-74 and lived there till 1976. I got to know your father at first through the Hollywood connection and over time ended up being out at the farm many times. In fact when my wife at the time and I separated your dad let me build a yurt up on the hill behind the farm house and I lived out there in the summer/fall of 1975. It helped me get grounded at the time. I can remember Kori jumping off the roof of what I think was a chicken koop into a hay pile. That summer I kinda ended up as a caretaker as your dad would stay in town some days. After moving to Ithaca I saw him alot less-usually when Id be on campus buying unused textbooks from instructors. He was a strong, complex soul and Im glad I got to know him.

I just wanted to say thanks and express my condolences to his family at his passing. I was an EOP student from 1977-1981 in Cortland with a B.A. in Studio Art and at the University @ Buffalo where I received an MFA in Sculpture. I did end up teaching Art locally and up near Fort Drumm. I also served on the Homer Central School board for twelve and a half years. I served the Cortland community for over thirty years combined. I also was a classmate and friend of his late son, Larry Newkirk at Homer High School until his untimely death. What Thomas Newkirk helped me attain is priceless and the fact that I also won the Larry Newkirk award while an undergrad made it all the more special. I was a white shadow in attendance with many of the minorities that were admitted into that program. In high school at Homer Larry would have me draw Black Panthers on his notebooks. My parents never graduated from high school but somehow Thomas instilled in me a drive I never would have had otherwise. I owe Thomas Newkirk everything I have right now and to the program that allowed me a way to serving others through Education. Sincerely David P. Quinlan, retired Art Teacher Marathon Central School , Indian River Central, Philadelphia New York and Dryden Central School District.
