Thomas Owens Obituary

Obituary published on Legacy.com by Memorial Services of Iowa at Ankeny Memorial (MSI) on Jan. 30, 2026.
Thomas "Tommy" John Owens, 47, of Des Moines, Iowa, passed away January 27, 2026.

Visitation will be held from 4:00 to 6:00 pm on Monday, February 9, 2026, at Memorial Services of Iowa (4208 N. Ankeny Blvd., Ankeny). A private burial will be held at a later date.

Tommy was born October 17, 1978, in Des Moines, Iowa, to Barbara K. Hokel and Patrick Owens. He attended Ankeny schools from kindergarten through high school. Tommy received his high school diploma from DMACC and went on to achieve a two-year associate's degree from DMACC.

Tommy loved the CUBS, both the I-CUBS and the Chi-CUBS. He went to the I-Cubs as often as possible. Living nearby, he could walk to the stadium and rarely missed a home game. He loved living in downtown Des Moines and was proud of the City of Des Moines. Tommy loved what he did for a living working in the hospitality industry. He was an excellent bartender and server and those he worked with thought highly of Tommy.

Tommy was such a sweet person and kind to everyone. With a tender heart of gold, his thoughtfulness and caring for people was obvious. He was an amazing gift giver as he was empathetic about what he thought people would like.

He was honest, almost to a fault. He was trustworthy and trusting of people. Tommy protected those he loved and cared about.

Thanksgiving was his favorite holiday as he loved the family get togethers. He adored his nieces and nephews.

Tommy is survived by his mother, Barbara K. Hokel; stepfather, John Barber; sister, Morgan Kay See; stepbrother, Patrick Barber (Kristin); stepsister, Allie Barber (Josh Ellenberg); nieces, Mikaya, Hunter, and Kate; nephews, Eli and Joshua; uncle, Bruce Hokel (Barbara Fern); and many loving cousins and friends.

He was preceded in death by his grandparents, Bud and Katherine Hokel, and Velma and Tom Owens; uncle, Brian Hokel; and first cousins, Dylan Danielson and Sally Scully.

The family would like to thank all of those who have reached out and expressed condolences.

Memorials may be sent to The Thomas Owens Memorial Fund c/o Barbara Hokel, 1275 S.W. Ankeny Road, Ankeny, Iowa 50023.
