Thomas Power Obituary

Visit the Bradshaw-Carter Memorial & Funeral Services - Houston website to view the full obituary.
Thomas Bruce Power (November 12, 1955 - October 2, 2025) was born in Fort Campbell, Kentucky, to Rose Ellen Boisseau (Crowder) Power who served as a nurse and Captain in the US Army and Elburn Rudolph Power. He was raised in New Boston and Galveston.

Bruce earned the Bachelor of Music in Organ from The Hurley School of Music at Centenary College in Shreveport, and the Master of Music in Organ Performance from The Shepherd School of Music at Rice University in Houston. His primary teachers were James Herrin, William C. Teague and Clyde Holloway.

Bruce served several churches in the Houston area including Augustana Lutheran, Covenant Baptist, Emerson Unitarian and First Cumberland Presbyterian. Upon moving to Houston in 1982, he served as Assistant at Palmer Memorial Episcopal Church. From 1985-1993, he was Assistant Organist at Christ Church Cathedral, assisting Clyde Holloway. He returned to the Cathedral in 1999 to assist Canon Robert L. Simpson serving as the Cathedral Organist until 2014. In 2015, Bruce became the part-time Organist/Choirmaster at Church of the Holy Cross in Shreveport, Louisiana. Upon his full retirement, he moved back to Houston, later becoming the Organist at St. Mark's Episcopal Church.

As an accompanist, Bruce worked for Houston Chamber Choir, Houston Masterworks Chorus, Houston Choral Society, Chase Bank Choir and Houston Grand Opera's Opera-to-Go.

In every position in which he served, Bruce was known for his extraordinary musical talent, the breadth of the repertoire at hand and his willingness to go the extra mile when called upon. His attention to detail was legendary; Choir Directors found him easy to work with as did those he accompanied. He was unfailingly kind to everyone, never speaking ill of colleagues. It goes without saying that his unique set of gifts and special character will be sorely missed by all who knew him.

There will be a memorial service on Saturday, November 1st at 11:00 AM at Saint Mark's Episcopal Church, Houston, Texas. The church is located at 3816 Bellaire Boulevard.
