Thomas J. "Tom" Sanfacon, 89, of
Vienna, Virginia, passed away peacefully on Wednesday, December 24, 2025.
Tom was born on May 6, 1936, in
Paterson, New Jersey, to Thomas A. and Laurette R. (Cyr) Sanfacon. He was the third of four children and part of the first generation in his family raised speaking English rather than French.
Tom attended PS 13 Elementary School, Delbarton School, and the University of Notre Dame. A gifted athlete, he excelled in football, baseball, and track and field, particularly in the high jump. During his years at Delbarton, he won numerous competitions, including the National High Jump Championship, and was honored as Outstanding Athlete of the Year in 1954. He continued his athletic career at Notre Dame, where he lettered in football and track and field. He graduated in 1958 with a Bachelor of Arts degree in Economics.
After graduation, Tom began his career at Univac in New York City and later transferred to its
Washington, DC, office. He then joined the Central Intelligence Agency, where he served as a data processing manager and instructor. While teaching a computer training course at the CIA, he met Martha E. "Bonnie" Hoffman. They married on July 27, 1963, and settled in Northern Virginia-moving to Sterling in 1964 and to Vienna in 1969-where they raised their three children.
From 1968 to 1982, Tom held various managerial roles at Value Systems Engineering. In 1982, he founded his own company, National Datacare Corporation. He enjoyed a semi-early retirement while his son, Mark, took over day-to-day operations and grew the business. The company was sold in 2024.
In retirement, Tom and Bonnie-affectionately known to each other as "T and B"-loved to travel together, visiting destinations such as Hawaii, Bermuda, the United Kingdom, Ireland, and enjoying a Danube River cruise. They also spent much time visiting family and friends, and Tom especially loved being behind the wheel-he never missed a chance to drive.
Tom was a devoted husband and father, known for his generosity, warmth, and unmistakable presence. He always had a joke to share. He loved talking with people-friends and strangers alike-and you always knew when Tom was in the room. He had a stubborn streak and persistence that served him well; after all, Bonnie was engaged to someone else when they first met, but Tom never gave up.
A lifelong sports fan, Tom particularly loved football and cheered passionately for the Notre Dame Fighting Irish and the Washington Redskins. He held season tickets for more than 20 years, attended two Super Bowls, and hosted legendary tailgate parties. He also cherished family vacations, especially the annual trips to Sandbridge Beach, Virginia.
Bonnie passed away in November 2022. She was the love of Tom's life, and he deeply missed her.
Tom is survived by his children: Ann Sanfacon of
Vienna, Virginia; Mark Sanfacon (Melissa) of Centreville, Virginia; and Keith Sanfacon of Herndon, Virginia; his four grandchildren, Nicholas Bomgardner, Brittney Sanfacon, Megan Sanfacon, and Adam Sanfacon; his sister, Paula Bracker of Madison, Wisconsin; his brother, John Sanfacon of Mt. Arlington, New Jersey; and many beloved nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his wife, his parents, his stepmother, Vivian Yates Sanfacon, and his sister, Loretta "Sandy" Graf.
