MARS HILL - Thomas "Tom" Lewis Saucier, of Mars Hill, Maine, passed away in his home on October 31, 2025.
He was born in Presque Isle on May 11, 1935, to Eola (Wilson) Saucier, Tom was raised by his mother and her sisters, Peggy and Faye, in the family home, which also served Mars Hill as the York Street Hospital. He graduated from Aroostook Central Institute in 1953 and attended the University of Maine at Orono, where he was a member-and later president-of Lambda Chi Alpha. He earned a B.A. in Business and Economics in 1957 and received a commission as a second lieutenant in the United States Army Reserve. After college, he served his country, rising to the rank of captain before receiving an honorable discharge.
Tom began his career in retail in Connecticut, where he met Judith Ann Hudak. They were married on February 4, 1961, during a blizzard, and welcomed four children while living in Connecticut: Thomas ("T.W."), Matthew, Jeffrey, and Janine. After several moves, they settled in Portsmouth, New Hampshire, where their fifth child, Joshua, was born. In 1971, following his mother's death, the family returned to Mars Hill and to his childhood home, the former hospital.
Tom served his hometown as town manager from 1975 to 1992, then as superintendent of the Mars Hill Utility District until his retirement in 1997. In retirement, he enjoyed golfing, fishing, hunting, and time with his family.
He was predeceased by his wife, Judith (Hudak) Saucier; his daughter, Janine (Saucier) Wheeler; his mother, Eola (Wilson) Graves; and his stepfather, Vincent Graves. He is survived by his sons Thomas ("T.W.") and wife, Sue; Matthew; Jeffrey and wife, Joy; and Joshua; as well as 10 grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.
Those who knew Tom describe him as kind and understanding, always greeting others with a smile. He was a wonderful neighbor and friend, a great town manager and public servant, and a gracious mentor to many who were grateful to work with him. He was a devoted husband, father, and grandfather whose quiet example shaped the generations that follow. Family recall that every conversation carried a lesson he didn't know he was teaching; "What would Dad/Grampa do?" became a guide to calmer, wiser choices. Grandchildren cherish the small moments-like watering the flowers on summer visits-and the way he made each of them feel seen. Neighbors and friends remember the simple joy of stopping by and being met by his warm, familiar welcome. To so many he was a role model and a kind soul; he lived with grace, without drama, and left this world content, surrounded by the people he loved.
We are going to miss him. He always did the dishes at camp.
A graveside service will be held on Friday, November 7, 2025, at 1 p.m. at Kings Grove Cemetery in Mars Hill, Maine.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests memorial contributions to Aroostook House of Comfort P.O. Box 867 Presque Isle, ME. 04769 in gratitude for their compassionate care of his wife, Judie. Arrangements have been entrusted to Bowers Funeral Home and Cremation Service in Presque Isle. Online condolences may be shared at Bowersfuneral.com
