We are saddened to announce the passing of Thomas Michael Saunders, lovingly known to many as Zombie, Slappy, and Southside Tom. On Tuesday November 26th, 2024, he departed this world, surrounded by those he cherished most, after battling a swift and aggressive Stage 4 lung cancer.
For over 40 years, Thomas served as a City of Pittsburgh Paramedic, retiring as a Crew Chief. He dedicated his career to saving lives and helping others in their most vulnerable moments. His compassion, and selflessness, left an indelible mark on countless lives. His legacy lives on in the true spirit of care, community, and resilience.
As a family man, he was unparalleled. A cherished husband to Gail Saunders for over 45 years. A loving father to Ann (Jon) and Tommy. He poured his heart into his family. Leading with warmth, kindness, humor, and a knack for fixing ANYTHING, and EVERYTHING. As a "Pap Pap" to Nicholas, his joy knew no bounds, his love for his grandson was as vast as the rivers he adored.
Nature was his sanctuary. He found peace by the water. Whether it be by the 3 Rivers, over which he kept watch as a member of River Rescue, or with friends in Tidioute, next to a fire. But most of all near the ocean, on his treasured island of Chincoteague, Virginia.
His love for "good times" was infectious. He could always be found laughing, cracking jokes, teaching a historical fact, or sharing a story to brighten someone's day. He was a man who saw life as an adventure, one that deserved to be enjoyed and celebrated.
As we say goodbye, we take comfort in knowing that his spirit will forever flow like the waters he cherished. Bringing life, movement, and beauty to all who remember him. He will forever "haunt the waters".
A celebration of his life will be held in Spring of 2025. Where we will honor his memory with the laughter, and joy that he brought to us all.
Rest in peace, Thomas. Your love, kindness, and strength will remain in our hearts forever.
