Thomas Gaines Scott, a beloved father, papa, and friend, passed away peacefully on February 26, 2025, in Granger, Indiana, at the age of 77. Tom was born on July 13, 1947, in Florence, Alabama, he was the beloved son of the late G. Lee and Carrye (Threet) Scott.
Tom graduated from Penn High School in 1965 where he lettered in varsity football.
On July 8, 1967, Tom wed Susan L. Hoffman. Tom and Sue were married for 46 years.
Tom went on to earn a Bachelor of Science in Business Administration from Indiana University-South Bend in 1970.
Directly after completing his college degree Tom was drafted into the U.S. Army where he was deployed to Korea and served as a typist from 1970-1972.
Tom worked for many years as an owner operator truck driver, contracting with Wicks Lumber. In 1973 Tom started Tom Scott Custom Builder where he spent many years building beautiful custom homes all over St. Joseph County.
Tom was the proud father of three sons: Steve (Kathy) Scott of Granger, IN, Bryan Scott of Granger, IN, and Mark (Trisha) Scott of Niles, MI.
His favorite title was Papa, and his memory will be forever cherished by his adoring grandchildren: Carson Scott of (Indy), Alexis Scott of (Indy), Griffin Scott of (Granger), Jordan Scott, Taylor Scott, Jayden Scott of (South Bend), Jaylynn Scott of (Indy), Reagan Scott and Gunnar Scott of (Niles, MI).
So much candy delivered, walks taken, and swings pushed, or they may have sat next to him while he "sawed logs" so loud they couldn't hear the TV.
Tom also loved and leaves behind many nieces and a nephew who may have gotten their eyes "poked out" if they weren't quick enough.
Tom found joy in the simple pleasures of life. He loved music, cold beer, a cruise on the lake, doing some fishing, and an occasional round of golf. He was a lifelong Alabama football fan. Tom enjoyed watching basketball and he spent many an evening following South Bend Clay basketball and watching the various basketball teams that Steve coached over the years. He was a "Simple Kind Of Man"
Tom was preceded in death by his parents Lee and Carrye, his brother Gary and his favorite dog Spike.
The family would like to thank the staff at the facilities Tom spent the last of his life in. We are truly grateful for your care.
A Memorial visitation will be held from 11:00am-2:00pm on Saturday March 8, 2025 at Palmer Funeral Home – Welsheimer Chapel 17033 Cleveland Rd. South Bend, IN 46635. Online condolences may be left for the family at www.palmerfuneralhomes.com
