In Loving Memory of Tom Shaffer

Thomas Shaffer, 80, of Hoffman Estates, Illinois, passed away on January 25, 2026. He was born and raised in Madison, Wisconsin. Tom was married to the love of his life, Dorothea, for 55 years.

He is survived by his wife, two siblings, 4 children, 7 grandchildren, and many nieces and nephews.

Tom spent his entire 35 year career at the Illinois Department of Transportation as a construction engineer. His greatest project was Illinois 390, formerly known as the Elgin-O'Hare Expressway. Tom was a die-hard Wisconsin Badger fan. He loved all Chicago sports teams, mostly the Bears and the Cubs. He enjoyed photography, music, hiking, biking, and could design and build anything from kitchen cabinets to garages to screened-in porches. He loved a good cup of coffee. Tom was a devoted husband, and he will be remembered as a family man who loved his children and grandchildren.

Tom's Celebration of Life services will be on Friday, February 6 at St. Hubert's Church in Hoffman Estates. Visitation will be from 9:00 - 10:00 AM at St. Hubert's, with the funeral mass celebrated at 10:00 AM.
