Thomas G. Smallcomb, 80, of Apalachin, NY, passed away June 15, 2025.
It is with great sadness that we announce, Thomas G. Smallcomb, Jr ascended to heaven on Father's Day, June 15, 2025. Nicole was by his side in his last moments; he passed peacefully and fearlessly. Born August 4, 1944, Tom lived his entire life in Vestal, NY. He graduated from Vestal High School in 1964, forever a Golden Bear. He is predeceased by his sisters, Luanne and Dorothy, as well as his beloved wife, Mary of 25 years. He is survived by his sister Alta Neville (Phil), brothers John Warwick (Laura), and David Warwick. Tom leaves behind his dearest children; daughter Nicole Nealy (Donnell), son Butch Birmingham (Amy), and son Thomas Smallcomb III. His best friend in the whole world, sweet pup Carmella, will miss him terribly as she has been his life partner since the day Mary passed.
Tom devoted his entire life to his community, serving in various positions within Broome County for over 50 years. His career with Willow Point began in 1974 and he proudly retired from the Broome County Offices in 1999. He also spent 25 years with the Vestal Fire Department, ranking Captain of Station 4; a role where he positively impacted the company for decades. Most notably, on September 6, 1986, Tom was a first responder to the horrific Hess tanker fire at the Johnson City traffic circle where 9,600 gallons of gasoline had spilled and immediately caught ablaze. His leadership proved vital, and videos of his work on that day are still used for training purposes; a standard for how to handle such dire situations.
In addition to these tremendous milestones, Tom was also a dedicated member of the American Legion for more than half his life. During that time, he held rankings including, but not limited to: Squadron 89 Commander, Broome County SAL Commander, 6th District Commander, Detachment of NY Commander, and National Vice-Commander (East). He was a member of the Fraternal Order of the Eagles for 52 years, holding every office, including President. A special thank you to David Lee and the rest of our Legion family, for your ongoing love and support during this time.
Tom will be severely missed by his grandchildren, Desiree (Brentyn), Liam, Ylaena, along with numerous nieces, nephews, and great-grandchildren. His spirit will live on through the passions he had in life, represented by his precious collections of memorabilia. We will see him in every image of a Lighthouse. Our ears will perk up at any mention of Dale Earnhardt. And we will all feel his joy when the Buffalo Bills finally decide to make something happen in the post season Go Bills!
Tom will be buried with his precious Mary at Vestal Hills. A celebration of life has been planned for June 29th from 2:00-6:00pm at the Legion Post 1700, 305 Maple Street, Endicott, NY. Please express condolences at www.SavageFS.com.
Cards of condolence may be sent in care of Nicole to 212 Vestal Road, Vestal, NY 13850. In lieu of flowers, or to honor Tom's will to give back to the community, please consider donating to the Oxford Veterans Home. Arrangements entrusted to SAVAGE-DeMarco Funeral Service.
