Thomas Smith Obituary

Obituary published on Legacy.com by Ebensberger-Fisher Funeral Home on Feb. 12, 2026.
Thomas C. Smith, 77, entered Heaven's gates on January 25, 2026. Born in Edinburg, Texas, on May 10, 1948, to John W. and Helen M. Smith, Tom was raised in McAllen, Texas. He graduated from McAllen High School and earned his Bachelor's Degree from Pan American College in 1971.

In June 1970, Tom married the love of his life, Barbara Ann Hosmer, in Pharr, Texas. Together, they built a life in McAllen, Alice, and Boerne. Their family became complete with the adoption of their three children: Richard in 1977, followed by Cynthia and Timothy in 1980.

Tom dedicated much of his professional life to protecting his community. He served with the McAllen and Alice Police Departments, the Kendall County Sheriff's Department, and finally the Boerne Police Department, from which he retired as an Investigator in May 2008. In addition to his law enforcement roles, Tom also taught in Mission, Robstown, and Agua Dulce.

Outside of work, Tom was a man of many interests. He found joy in the simple things: fishing, camping, wood whittling, sketching, and reading. He was a fan of westerns and was always ready for a good story and a hearty laugh with his family.

Tom was preceded in death by his parents, John and Helen Smith; his sister, Katherine Morse; and his brother, Joe Padgett.

He is survived by his loving wife of 55 years, Barbara, from Boerne, TX. He is also survived by his children: Richard Smith of College Station, TX; Cindy Wilkinson of Kingwood, TX; and Tim Smith of Houston, TX. His grandsons include Nathanael (Madison), Benjamin, and Ethan Wilkinson.

He is further survived by extended family members: brother-in-law Gary (Cecilia) Hosmer; 4 nephews, 4 nieces, and many other family members.

Tom was a member of First Baptist Church, Boerne. A Celebration of Life Service will be held at the church on Saturday, March 7, 2026, at 10:00 a.m.

The family extends their deepest gratitude to San Antonio Home Healthcare and the Aspen Hospice Care team for their compassionate support.
