Thomas Smith Obituary

Obituary published on Legacy.com by Best Funeral Services Phoenix on Mar. 8, 2026.
Thomas (Tom) James Smith, 81, passed away peacefully on March 5, 2026, in Phoenix, Arizona. Tom was a father, grandfather, and a good friend to everyone he met.

Tom was strong, independent, and humorous throughout his life. He had a deep sense of adventure and encouraged others to explore new places and experiences. He loved spending time in his woodworking shop, listening to concerts on his home theater system, and taking well earned breaks in his recliner watching YouTube.

In recent years, Tom enjoyed meeting people as a Lyft driver and never met a bowl of ice cream he didn't like. Although he sometimes appeared introverted to others, he especially cherished time with his family and grandchildren.

Tom was predeceased by his father, Jesse James "Dick" Smith; his mother, Willie Mae McJunkins Smith; and his brother, Ron Michael Smith. He is survived by his children, Scott Smith and Pam Gower; his grandchildren Ben Smith, Megan Smith, and Weber Gower; his sister in law Eva Smith; and his niece, Ronnie Smith.

He was grateful for the many close friends, neighbors, and supporters who enriched his life.

Tom lived an active and full life-from his early days serving in the U.S. Air Force to his years living in Arkansas, Washington D.C., California, Michigan, and Arizona. As recently as last summer, he traveled to Spain simply because he wanted to try authentic Mediterranean food. Every year, he took a birthday road trip in his electric car-his pride and joy-from Arizona to Michigan to visit his children and grandchildren.

He will be deeply missed and lovingly remembered.
