Thomas Irvin Starling Jr.

Thomas Irvin Starling, Jr. passed away on March 16, 2025, just a few days before his 81st birthday. He was known by many names - Tom, Tommy, T.I., Atty, Dad, and Granddad - each reflecting the different roles he cherished in life.
Thomas was born on March 19, 1944, in Jackson, Mississippi to Thomas Irvin Starling and Maida Fulgham Starling. He grew up in Jackson and attended Murrah High School before going on to Millsaps College where he made lifelong friends. After finishing his undergraduate studies at Mississippi State University, Thomas attended the University of Mississippi School of Law.
Following law school, he clerked for Justice Stokes Robertson, Jr. of the Mississippi Supreme Court and later entered private practice. He became a partner at Crockett, Neeld, and Starling and eventually established his own successful law practice, which spanned forty-five years. Beyond his legal career, Thomas was known for his deep commitment to the community. He volunteered at the University of Mississippi Medical Center and the Billy Brumfield Men's Shelter. In 2017, he was honored as Volunteer of the Year at the University of Mississippi Medical Center.
Thomas made a home in Northeast Jackson with his wife of over 50 years, Rebecca Kean Starling. He enjoyed fishing, cooking, walking, and the study of history. Above all, he loved his family and holiday traditions. He was especially known for dressing up as Uncle Sam and leading a neighborhood parade on the 4th of July each year.
Thomas will be fondly remembered for his quick wit and his kind heart. Loved by many, Thomas will be missed especially by his wife, Rebecca Starling of Jackson; his daughter, Amy Starling Rampy (Matthew) of Austin; his son, Justin Starling (Megan) of Memphis; his son, Michael Starling (Rebecca), of Jackson, and his six grandchildren (Isabel Rampy, Griffin Rampy, James Starling, Sophie Starling, Joey Starling, and Miller Starling).
Visitation will be held at Northminster Baptist Church in Jackson on March 22nd at 3:00 pm. A memorial service will follow at 4:00 pm at Northminster Baptist Church. Childcare will be provided. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the Billy Brumfield Men's Shelter of Jackson (Stewpot Community Services.)
