Thomas "Tom" John Stewart, Sr., passed away on March 19, 2025, at Bayhealth Hospital in Dover, DE, at the age of 84. Born on February 19, 1941, in Pittsburgh, PA. He was predeceased by his parents Clarence J. Stewart and Norma Thomas Stewart, as well as his second wife Katherine Bulger Stewart.
Tom's early years in Pittsburgh and Ligonier PA laid the foundation for his love of horses when he purchased his first horse, Flame, with money earned from his paper route. He further pursued this passion at Valley Forge Military Academy, where he was a proud member of D Troop and showcased his equestrian skills on the polo squad. He carried this love into his professional life. Tom completed his formal education at Parsons College in Fairfield, Iowa.
An accomplished horseman, including as an assistant trainer and steeplechase jockey, Tom pursued a career in equestrian sports which led him to Upperville, VA, and Middletown, DE. His membership in the National Steeplechase Association reflected his dedication to the sport. Unfortunately, an injury curtailed his active participation in horse-riding, but Tom's adventurous spirit never waned. He transitioned to a career as a driver for Reed Trucking in Milton, DE, where he was known for his friendly demeanor and professionalism.
Tom's sense of adventure extended beyond the racecourse. An avid skier, he shared his expertise as a ski instructor in Pennsylvania and upstate New York, and held a membership with the Canadian Ski Instructors Alliance. His ability to encourage and inspire others, whether on horseback or on the slopes, was a testament to his friendly and supportive nature.
Left to honor Tom's legacy are his beloved family members: his brother, Jim Stewart, (Denise), of Rehoboth Beach, DE; his daughter, Heather Kaznoski, (Pete), of Marblehead, MA; his son, Thomas Stewart, Jr., of Boulder, CO; his step-son, Jack Maier, (Joanna), of Darien, CT; and his grandsons, Alex Maier and Wilson Kaznoski.
Tom's life was also enriched by many cousins, friends (including his breakfast group), and neighbors who became like family through the years. Tom's memory will be cherished as a loving husband, father, grandfather, brother, and friend.
A viewing will be held on Tuesday, March 25th from 11:00 AM to 12:00 PM followed by funeral services at 12:00 PM in the Faries Funeral Chapel, located at 29 S. Main Street in Smyrna. Burial will follow in Odd Fellows Cemetery in Smyrna.
