Thomas Unangst Obituary

Thomas Charles Unangst, 78, of Winona, died October 3, 2025, at Gundersen Hospital, La Crosse, WI

Born April 30, 1947, in Rockford, IL, to Letha (Upham) and Charles Unangst JR.

Tom’s family is sad to announce that Tom succumbed to Interstitial Lung Disease after being diagnosed 4 years ago. He died with his wife Kathy, his children Tiffany McVey, & Brad (Tanya) Unangst, and his grandchildren Ross (Lexi) McVey, Caity McVey, Rylie Unangst, and Slade Unangst by his side.

He loved life and often expressed how lucky he was at life. His family was #1. He was proud of his wife, his daughter, his son, his daughter-in-law and his four grandchildren, and he loved all of them unconditionally.

He taught social studies for 40 years at La Crescent -Hokah High School. He loved the community and the students most of all. The best part of teaching for him was the rapport and relationship he had with students and staff, many who became close friends.

He was well liked and had many friends. He was grateful for the friends he had and all the great memories of the times spent together.

He was preceded in death by his parents and his older sister Janet Vrstal. His in-laws Art & Geraldine Cappo. His brother in laws, Robert and Richard Cappo, and Craig Bruegger.

He is survived by his wife, his children, his grandchildren, his brother in laws, Jack Vrstal, John (Lori) and Ron Cappo and sister in laws, Marilyn (Tom) White and Karen Arringdale.

A private ceremony was held for immediate family October 4. There will be a Celebration of Tom’s Life at the La Crescent Event Center in La Crescent, MN May 9, 2026.

Hoff Celebration of Life Center is assisting the family.
