Thomas Leonard Wegener joined the saints in Heaven on Saturday, June 7, 2025 at Midland's King's Daughters Home. He was born in Bay City, MI to Leonard and Marie (Ittner) Wegener on March 1, 1941.
He attended elementary grades at St. Paul Lutheran School in Frankenlust. Tom then attended Michigan Lutheran Seminary in Saginaw for his high school years. He received his Bachelor of Science degree from Concordia Teachers College in River Forest, IL in 1964 before continuing on to earn his Master's in Music Education from Wisconsin University in Stevens Point, WI in 1970. In 1968 and 1970 Tom studied Organ design in Europe.
His teaching career was in Chicago, IL, Wisconsin Rapids, WI, Elkhart, IN, and St. John's Lutheran Church and School in Midland, retiring in 2003. After his teaching retirement, Tom served as music director at Grace Lutheran Church in Auburn where he also celebrated his 50th year of serving the churches in worship and music.
Tom was a long-time member of AGO, American Guild of Organists. His greatest loves were constructing, operating, and collecting Lionel Trains, but most of all, his love of family; his wife Ruth (Thiel) Wegener; children, Martin Wegener and Laura (Jeff) Cergnul; and beloved grandchildren, Noah, Jonah, Lila, Brady, and Ethan. He was preceded in death by his parents Leonard and Marie Wegener.
The family wishes to thank MyMichigan Medical Center, Optimal Hospice, and Midland's King's Daughters Nursing Home for their excellent care.
Funeral services for Tom will take place at 11 a.m. Friday, June 13, 2025 at Grace Lutheran Church, 303 Ruth Street in Auburn, with burial in Lutheran Home Cemetery. His family will receive friends at Ware Smith Woolever Funeral Home, 1220 West Wheeler Street in Midland, on Thursday, June 12, 2025, from 2-4 and 6-8 p.m. and at the church on Friday from 10 a.m. until the time of service. Those planning an expression of sympathy may wish to consider Grace Lutheran Church. All of us at Ware Smith Woolever are honored the Wegener family has entrusted us with the care of their loved one.
