Born in 1932 in West Helena, Arkansas, to Cora Valentine and Elijah Starling, Thurmon, nicknamed Bubba, was a beacon of light from the very beginning. Both parents preceded him in death. Thurmon met Naomi Casey and was blessed with his one and only child, Patricia Valentine.
Although he was the only child of Cora, his early years in the South were steeped in the warmth of family. In 1951, as a young man, Thurmon answered the call of duty and served in the US Army during the Korean Conflict for three years.
Upon his return from Korea, Thurmon ventured north to Chicago, where he immersed himself in the vibrant blues scene. His soulful presence made him a beloved figure among musicians and enthusiasts alike. In the mid 1950's he wrote and produced a play (which started out as a song), "The Vampire" that was performed at different locations on the South Side of Chicago. His first recorded single was on Bea & Baby Records: "Teenage Jump" and "Little Lu-Lu Frog". In the 1960's, T Valentine (as he was known in the music industry) started his own record label titled Val Records, and his Gospel label was Cora Records. He was very proud to record "Betty Sue", "Do the Do", "Black Power", "Massius Ray", and many others on his own label. His biggest hit came in 1983/4 it was titled "Hello Lucille are you a Lesbian?". He was truly blessed to be able to do what he loved until late in his 80's.
In 2023, Thurmon decided to spend his final days surrounded by his loving family. He returned to his foundation in the church and attended Faith Temple Church weekly. If he wasn't feeling well on Saturday, He would surely rest up and be ready for church on Sunday morning.
Thurmon leaves to celebrate his memory, his only daughter Patricia (Spencer) Joseph; Grandsons Logan (Talia) Jefferson, Landon (Shannon) Jefferson, Latrell Jefferson, Joshua Joseph, Javion Britton; granddaughters Leland (Ellis) Jefferson-Smith, Symone Joseph, Shamia House, Jaleaha Joseph; Great-Grandchildren Korri, Tyrie, Hakeem; Sisters Rosa Lee Starling, Kathy Starling, Doris Starling, and Betty Starling; Brothers Jerome Starling, and Jerry Starling; In addition to a host of nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.
