Tim Athos, 83, passed away peacefully in his San Diego, CA home with his daughter and son-in-law by his side as a result of a rare blood cancer which came on suddenly over the past 3 months. He will be greatly missed by all that knew him.
Tim was an extremely hard worker, with a unique sense of humor and touched everyone he met. He loved his family Josie, Christine, James, son-in-law Christopher and three grandchildren Amanda, John, and Ava.
The son of Greek immigrants Aristides and Panagiota Athanasopoulos, Tim was born in Teaneck, NJ May 25, 1938, and grew up in Bronx, NY where he attended school and worked at his father's candy shop. At age 17 Tim began working as a Bank Teller at First National City Bank while also serving his country in the Army reserve. He was honorably discharged in 1966 after five years of service. Tim met his sweetheart Josephine (Josie) Meade at age 15. Tim and Josie were inseparable, known as a couple by everyone on University Avenue and were often seen in Tim's favorite car; a 1955 yellow and black Ford Fairlane Sunliner convertible. Tim and Josie married February 3, 1962 and moved into an apartment in Yonkers. He then joined the New York police department in 1963 and moved from the Bronx to Rockland County to raise a family in the small town of Congers, NY. Tim had a long and distinguished 19-year career with the NYPD and was recognized by his commanders at the 50th Precinct with several awards for serving the community. Tim loved the NYPD and treasured the comradery and friendships he made with fellow police officers which he held closely all his life. Shortly after retirement from the NYPD in 1982, Tim relocated with his family to La Mesa in San Diego California where he invested in a SNAP-ON TOOLS business as an independent dealer. Tim quickly learned the business, worked 18-hour days, and became the highest grossing SNAP-ON dealer in California within 3 years. In fact, Tim's territory was so successful, when he finally sold the business back to SNAP-ON after 25 years, SNAP-ON sold his territory to three different franchisees. Tim adored his wife Josie, the love of his life who was his rock and kept him grounded while he was growing his business and raising the family. He was devastated when she was taken by Pancreatic Cancer at the young age of 59 in 1997.
Tim developed many friendships during the 40 years he spent in San Diego. He loved San Diego's temperate climate and friendly people and vowed "he would never go back to the cold weather". Tim loved driving to Marina Del Rey to visit and spend time with his older brother Jimmy. He had several hobbies and passions including music, cars, motorcycles biking, train sets and aquariums,. Tim purchased over 50 cars and a dozen or so motorcycles in his lifetime including a custom police edition Harley Davidson "Electra Glide" that showcased his NYPD precinct and badge number on the gas tank. He taught himself the guitar and loved to play vinyl albums on his high-end, perfectly kept audio equipment. Tim's home in San Diego was also the envy of the neighborhood, being meticulously kept inside and out complete with synthetic turf lawn. Tim was always in motion either fixing things around the house, working on his vehicles, or tending to his many hobbies.
Tim Athos is preceded in death by his wife Josie and son Jimmy. He is survived by his daughter Christine, son-in-law Christopher and three grandchildren Amanda, John and Ava Monteferrante; his brother Demetrios (Jimmy), sister-in-law Evridiki (Vicky) Athos and his friendly dog Annie.
